Keep Your Porn to Yourself!

I love public libraries, especially in the summer. Air conditioning, free books, story hour, and perverts looking at online porn. What more do you want?

Boy covering his eyes

Meanest Mom Jana Mathews: I've visited community libraries all over the country and the one attribute that they all seem to share is men viewing hard-core porn on the public access computers in the middle of the afternoon. The first time I noticed the behavior I had my four young kids in tow. Horrified and furious, I complained to the librarian, who told me very matter-of-factly that there was nothing she could do about it. It was a public library and its patrons had the right to view whatever they wanted to on the Internet (as long as the sound was turned off), even if it was a graphic sex scene on a computer within eyeshot of the children's section.

Think that is bad? Last month, I took my kids on a cross-country plane ride. An hour into the flight, the man sitting next to my five-year-old son began watching an anime movie (Japanese cartoons) on his laptop. I was fine with my son looking over the guy's shoulder ... until the cartoon characters started taking off their clothes. This time, I didn't bother calling in the reinforcements. I demanded that the man turn the movie off ...which he did ... very slowly ... and with a loud exasperated sigh of annoyance.

The guy's reaction highlighted the ridiculous absurdity of my request. Going two hours without looking at porn is just too much to ask.

Call me a traditionalist, but since when do the rights of perverts (for that is the proper term for people who view porn in public places) come before and above social decency, common sense, and consideration of our country's youngest and most innocent group of citizens -- namely, our children?

If you want to look at porn -- go for it! Just not around me or my kids ... or anyone else's!!!

Would you be happier if he switched to some highly violent anime? Or just some nudity?

To Anonymous: Um, I think she’d have a problem with that too. Look, it’s not just nudity. She’s not talking about people checking out Michaelangelo’s “David” or medical websites on how to do a breast exam. She’s talking about people watching other people (animated or not) goin’ at it. And I have to agree - I don’t care if that’s what you’re into, but do it at home, or at least in private for crying out loud! If that were my kid instead of hers, I’d be irked too!

Why were you letting your son look over the shoulder of a stranger on a plane, regardless of what the stranger is viewing?

WOW! I have never ever seen any one watching porn in a library of for that matter on a plane. Maybe it is your luck. But we do agree porn should be for private time LOL @trigeia

WTF is your problem lady. Stop snooping on what other people are doing, keep your eyes (and your kids eyes) pointed foreward and not in other peoples buisness

Pretty sure that it is illegal to watch porn in the library. I know if you walked into the children’s section and started reading a Playboy you’d get arrested for Lewd and Lacivious, and Corruption of a minor. At the very least you had a lazy librarian because they CAN tell people what is appropriate since they OWN the computers.

At my local library, they are not allow to restrict people from viewing porn as long as they are 18+. They also give them a partition type thing to put up so that others cannot see if they do not want to look. I don’t get why someone would want to do that in a library but whatever.

even when kids aren’t around, watching porn on the plane or in the public place is etremely RUDE. On the plane it’s even worse since you can’t get away. I’d be mad as well.

EEEEEWWW! Since when is porn for use in ANY public place? Jeez… a woman can get kicked out of a library for breastfeeding her baby in the kids’ section, but Joe Perv over there can watch people going at it on the computer where anyone can see it? Talk about backwards… Kids aren’t the only ones who shouldn’t have to see your people’s porn, either… keep it at home, PLEASE!

Oh god - you’re that horrible mom who polices other people instead of watching her own kids - they shouldn’t be looking at other people’s laptops.

Personally, I’d be more worried about my child watching Fox News… For instance, remember those interviews with Palin where they were butchering turkeys behind her? Children need early sex education. maybe we wouldn’t have 14 year old kids in Republican families getting pregnant
