Bras Over Dodge St. Banned After Principal Reports Plan

The principal of St. Margaret Marys Catholic school reported the plan to the city, saying it was inappropriate for children to see women's undergarments.
"I was crying all morning because I really wanted this to work," said organizer Shari Stone. Stone and Omaha station 101.9 The Big O were behind the event.
About 50,000 cars per day pass under the pedestrian bridge, which connects Memorial Park to the north side of Elmwood Park.
Stone said bras across Dodge Street would have garnered that much more awareness. The city said the plan would be dangerous.
"It's a public place," said city traffic engineer Todd Pfitzer. "Nobody can stop you from crossing there, but we can stop you from going up there and hanging things off of our bridge."
City officials said anyone who wants to display something across the bridge needs a permit and a $1 million insurance policy in case anything falls onto cars. The city said the radio station did not have a permit, nor would have officials granted a permit anyway.
"We do allow banners up there at times for different events ... but we feel by stringing bras across it, it will cause people to look up there and take focus away from the road." But that's the point. And now Stone is left looking for other avenues to attract awareness for the Oct. 4 Race for the Cure run.
"I think this would be a good way to bond everybody together and just have some fun. It's like you have to beg for forgiveness," she said.
By law, the gathering of more than 25 people on a public right of way requires a permit. Fewer people usually go unnoticed. But if they're distracting, the city said it turns the event over to law enforcement.

because kids have never seen bras before. It’s not like there are gigantic Victoria’s Secret displays in evey mall in the country or anything. good grief.
BIrdsfly, that’s not really the point. That would be a major distraction and I think the city made the right decision.
I agree with rugby mom. There are better ways to bring awareness.
Admittedly, there is surely a better idea than hanging bras off a bridge- but the purpose for reporting this is ludicrous. That kids shouldn’t see bras? Last I checked, responsible mothers dragged their kids into the fitting rooms with them to keep an eye on them, not to mention that roughly 50% of the kids that would have seen the display would be female and will be wearing a bra soon enough themselves.
The bras would have been no more distraction than anything else hanging from that bridge. If you’re this over-protective of your kids, then seeing a lacy bra is the least of your worries. Your teenagers are probably skipping class to smoke pot in someone’s basement as I type this.
I can’t believe that something that was an awareness raising idea was slammed. I sent a bra for my sister who has been battling breast cancer for six years. She was so excited about a bra with her initial on it being seen by people who would cheer for her, even though they didn’t know her. Shame on you narrow minded people!
Hanging bras off a bridge is ridiculous!! What is next, condoms?? Get involved in fundraisers if you want to do some good. My friend has breast cancer, she cannot wear a real bra. I think it would upset her if she saw them. And what were you thinking about the kids in that area. DUMB IDEA!!!

This is a great cause; but maybe not the smartest way to get support for it. I cannot say I blame them. There are more tasteful and appropriate ways to get support for Breast cancer and actually that cause has a lot of support and awareness through many avenues.
