NY Daily News: Look who's talking! Guys who gossip outnumber gossip girls two to one, according to new research, and 80 percent of our conversations are spent on discussing other people and their habits. The study of 300 people, by Dr. Nicholas Emler as reported in the London Daily Mail, found that while we love exchanging juicy tidbits of personal info, only about 5 percent of gossip is malicious.

And guess what? Gossip may actually be vital to our survival, according to the Daily Mail, which notes that the exchange of gossip may have helped cavemen to elect leaders and to catch thieves.

"Language evolved to allow us to gossip and develop more complex societies," Emler told the British Science Festival. "In fact it is gossip that sets us apart from other animals. It is fundamental to being human. It allows us to know about people that we have never met."

Relationship expert Andrea Syrtash says that while gossip can help people bond with others, it can also be hurtful.

"People can use gossip to drag someone under the bus, or it can help establish trust in someone," she says. "But it's worth being careful. If someone is always giving you the dirt on other people, then you're part of the mix when she talks to someone else Be careful how much information you share."

Gossip may have been crucial to our ancestors' early survival, but today it "exalts mean girls," says Dr. David Eigen, a psychologist and the author of "Men the Gods of Love and Women the Gods of Wisdom."

"Gossiping can be a surrogate for connecting and for creating real relationships," he says "When people gossip, they tend to create phony relationships rather than sharing real issues."

Emler tells the Daily Mail that while baboons and chimps can establish complex societies, they're limited to groups of around 50 since they can't talk and so must rely on observation only.

"You can only see and observe a certain amount," Emler said. "With gossip you can know about 100,000 people without knowing them."
