WTAE: An Indiana mother was cited after police said she directed her foul mouth toward her 10-year-old daughter in public.

Tammy Kay Cronan Smith "was yelling profanities, and she was yelling at a level that the people around her became very concerned, very annoyed, and the officer did approach her and she was subsequently cited for disorderly conduct," Indiana Police Chief William Sutton said.

By phone, Cronan Smith told WTAE Channel 4's Jennifer Miele that she doesn't make a habit of using that sort of language around her daughters.

Although she admitted using profanity to an excess, Cronan Smith told Miele that she was angry at an adult friend and the words were not directed at her daughter. She declined to say what she was angry about.

Police said the incident happened at Family Video on Oakland Avenue, where a police officer noticed a woman walking out of the store and swearing loudly.

"He was on duty -- routine patrol -- and came across the noise and stopped to investigate what was gong on," Sutton said.

Police said Cronan Smith told them she was angry at her daughter because the girl wrongly accused her sister of stealing bubble gum inside the video store.

Police said the woman continued directing profanity toward her daughter as she walked around the corner from the store, and when the officer cited her, she told him she did nothing wrong.

Cronan Smith will receive a summary citation for disorderly conduct in the mail, accusing her of making unreasonable noise in a public place. She can plead guilty and pay a fine or plead not guilty and take the case to court.
