My Fox: A Texas high school student stabbed a teacher to death in a classroom on Wednesday morning, police said.

The Tyler Independent School District identified the victim as special education teacher Todd Henry.

The incident happened around 9 a.m. in a classroom at John Tyler High School, Superintendent Dr. Randy Reid said.

"At the time of the incident, one teacher, one paraprofessional and three students were in the classroom. The classroom atmosphere was normal," Reid said. "One student approached the teacher and assaulted the teacher with an edged weapon."

The paraprofessional immediately subdued the student and turned him over to district police, Reid said.

Henry was rushed by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The student, who officials did not identify, was taken into custody on campus and was being detained at the Smith County Juvenile Detention Center.

The school was immediately put into lockdown mode following the attack and classes were canceled around 10:45 a.m. All students were sent home.

"We want to emphasize that today's events were an unforeseen, isolated circumstance. The situation was not gang related or racially motivated, nor was it associated with any other incident," Reid said.

However, he said, the district will increase security at the campus for the "foreseeable future."

Tyler is about 100 miles southeast of Dallas.
