Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year. Traditionally, apples dipped in honey are eaten to symbolize a "sweet new year." Here are a few recipes to keep family tradition alive:

Starter: Put out sliced apples on a plate to dip into a bowl of honey, as well as some challah from your favorite bakery.

Main Course: Mom's Brisket

Ingredients:
1 4-5 pound brisket
Kosher salt
Pepper
Garlic salt
Paprika
2 large onions, sliced
2 cups beef stock
1 ½ cups red wine
1 package of onion soup mix

Directions:
Season brisket with salt, pepper, garlic salt, and paprika. Sear in Dutch oven or roaster on stove at medium-high heat on both sides. Add sliced onions, and cook for 10 minutes, turning occasionally. Place brisket fat side up, turn to medium heat, cover pan, and cook for 10 minutes. Remove from heat.

Add onion soup mix, beef stock, red wine, and place in 350-degree oven for approximately 2 ½ hours, or until meat is tender. Slice meat across the grain and return to pan. Cook another ½ hour.

Side Dish: Norma's Famous Cherry Kugel

Ingredients:
1 can maraschino cherries
10 oz egg noodles
1 small can crushed pineapple
1 stick butter/margarine
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 cup raisins (yellow)
1 teaspoon lemon juice
2 eggs

Directions:
Preheat oven to 325. Drain maraschino cherries and cut in half. Boil noodles and drain with cold water. Mix eggs, cinnamon, sugar, lemon juice, pineapples, and cherries. Add noodles to mixture. Melt butter on 9 x 13 pan. Put mixture into pan, spread out, and bake for 50 minutes.
