Disney Princesses Deconstructed

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Here are the true character motivations of the Disney princesses, according to one snarky blogger.

We saw this on Buzzfeed today and thought it was food for thought.

Disney Princess

We've been conflicted on the princess issue here at momlogic. Some of us see it as harmless fun for girls ... while others bristle at the "damsel in distress" sentiment.

Where do you stand on the issue?

Hey, don’t forget: Belle turned down an offer to marry the manliest, most handsome man in town because she wanted someone who valued her intellect and curiosity. And Jasmine didn’t want to be a princess because she didn’t want the law to tell her she had to marry someone. She said “IF I do marry, I want it to be for love.” I get the point with some of the old-fashioned Disney Princesses, but whoever made this graphic isn’t being entirely fair to the newer Princesses.

i completely agree. you’re basing your theories a bit too broadly on the story line.and for the little mermaid, she fell in love and changed her appearance because she was half-fish. not to get the prince to accept her. and the prince had fallen in love with her as well but didn’t know who she was, except for her voice. which is why the witch took it away from her. and the prince never had a problem with her being a mer-maid, it just took him off-guard.

Most Disney movies are translated (loosely and, often times, badly) from the Grimm collective of fairy tales, not to mention that Disney himself was hugely prejudice against anything that wasn’t a white Christian dude. He was also incredibly possessive- he had the voice actor/singer for Snow White black listed everywhere so that she could pretty much never be in another movie. People should count themselves lucky that The Little Mermaid didn’t end with Ariel dying heart broken and alone, or that Cinderella’s step-sisters weren’t blinded by pigeons on her wedding day. Sheesh.

What do you mean ‘count themselves lucky’ that the stepsisters were not blinded? That is a much better ending. Really gets the point across to not be a horrible, horrible person.

@CC, I was going to say about the same thing, this ignores that Belle was ostracized for being an educated woman and then she fell in love with the best on a mental level because his form prevented love on a physical level. @Anon, Don’t forget the Wicked Queen fron Snow White having to dance in red hot iron shoes at the wedding!
