The Stomach Flu Makes a Visit

Words every mom dreads hearing: "Mommy, I think I'm going to throw up!"

Blythe Newsome: This week, one by one, all my children got the stomach flu. I tried to quarantine the first one, but realized there was no way to quarantine a toddler. If the CDC and WHO can stop the bubonic plague, can they please find a cure for the stomach flu?

I raced around the house wiping everything that wasn't moving, but in spite of the scrubbing, they all got it. There is no way to be prepared for six little people getting sick. Every time I would get one cleaned up, I would hear, "Mommy, I need you."

And then I got it.

I would rather give birth to a 9-pound baby without an epidural than throw up. And of course, by the time I got it, all the kids are healthy and ready to play, eat, jump, and dance.

How can children bounce back so quickly? One minute they are throwing up so much you expect their heads to start spinning, and the next minute they are fine and ready to play. I don't recover so quickly. In fact, it may be a long time before I get over this health crisis.

Now that we are all healthy, it is time for the clean-up. Is there a federal disaster fund for this? I have to rip up the carpet, repaint the walls, and throw out every pillow. I wonder if this falls under our homeowner's insurance as a catastrophic event. Better yet, maybe by next flu season, there will be a cure!

OMG, my 3-yo son hasn’t thrown up in a while (knock on wood), but of course his friend was spending the night one night last week and hurled all over his room, white carpet!!! GROSS. Soaked it up w/ and inch of baking soda over night, vaccuumed; treated with a paste of oxyclean and water for 15 minutes; went over it with carpet shampooer. Completely gone. No need to declare federal disaster!

I vividly remember when this happened to me and my family a few years ago. I literally wanted to light a match to my house and rebuild it from the ground up.

Oh no. Six kids with stomach flu? I can’t imagine. It’s bad enough with two. My son, when he as 5, bowed to the porcelain God and started praying, “Jesus! Please take this from me and I’ll be a light for you at school! Please JESUS!! PLEASE.” IT was so heart-wrenching and yet hilarious at the same time. My preacher boy.

My son vomited twice then the next day woke up w/ low grade fever. After a trip to the drs, it was declared….the dreaded stomach virus!! But, the pediatrician prescribed a miracle pill called Zofran - it blocks the actions of chemicals in the body that can trigger nausea and vomiting. Worked perfect - he never complained of nausea & didn’t vomit again. YAY!!! Read more: http://www.momlogic.com/comment-preview.php#ixzz0VZcW6PMA
