Target's Illegal Alien Costume Causes Outrage

KTLA: An immigrant rights group has asked Target stores to stop selling an illegal alien costume they describe as "offensive" to immigrants and "ignorant."

illegalalien270.jpg
The costume, sold on Target's web site, features a mask of an extraterrestrial being, wearing an orange jumpsuit with "illegal Alien" written on it, and a "green card" accessory.

Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, says she emailed Target Headquarters on Friday, calling the costume "distasteful, mean-spirited, and ignorant of social stigmas and current debate on immigration reform."

Many Target customers have given the costume the lowest product rating possible on the site-- 1 of 5 stars-- and have expressed their distaste in the "guest review" section.

"The costume is a sick sign of the times we are living in in this country where those who are not 'people like us' might as well be from another planet and are considered less than human. I am surprised Target would promote such a mentality," one customer wrote on the website.

Target spokesman Joshua Thomas says the company will be removing the costume from the site after receiving several complaints.

According to Thomas, the store never intended to sell the outfit and only included it in its online Halloween offerings by mistake.

Some customers say they will refuse to shop at Target Stores until the costume is removed from the site and an apology is issued. Others call the costume "funny" and say the offended parties should "lighten up."

"This has nothing to do with immigrants," another customer wrote, "Only the illegal criminals from Mars that entered the US without doing it the correct way."

Target started getting complaints Thursday afternoon, Thomas said, but the costume was still online Friday evening. Target's website is managed by Amazon.com, and Thomas said it could take as long as 48 hours to take it down.

Why should they boycot? We’re not even allowed to JOKE about the illegal aliens in our country now? Well I guess we better get rid of all the prisoner costumes too. We wouldn’t want to offend any of THOSE people for breaking the law either! Give me a break.

Kasey October 17, 2009, 8:49 AM

THANK YOU Rachelle! This is totally outrageous! This is a sign of the sick times we’re in- times where noone can take a joke and everyone MUST be politically correct in every second of our lives. Its America, a free country. I strongly advise Target NOT to do away with this costume, the people that are offended by this should grow up and learn how to take a joke and stop crying. Its funny, now put down your Kleenex, stop crying, and enjoy a good laugh because obviously the world isn’t going to become politically correct for you so just enjoy it the way it is!!!

I’m usually a raging liberal but I don’t get what is so offensive. I never would have taken this costume as saying illegals are not human. It’s just a stupid play on the word alien. It’s not that brilliant, and I wouldn’t wear it, but I don’t understand where the outrage is coming from.

This is ridiculous. The outfit is funny and there are many wayy more offensive halloween costumes out there… they really do need to “lighten up.”

Jennifer Miller October 17, 2009, 1:42 PM

I might be wrong, but I
think people need to lighten up with this. I don’t see it as a racist (except
maybe if you’re a space alien :-p)… maybe if it was wearing a
sombrero or something it would be in bad taste, but… are people just
assuming that they’re referring to Mexicans when they get offended by
this costume? That’s what I think is racist… an illegal alien is anybody,
from any country, who isn’t here lawfully. You can be European and be
an illegal alien. So, if they’re making fun of race with this costume,
they’re making fun of every race…

I’m so glad to see people responding to this w/out being all pissed off. It’s funny…as the saying goes “It’s not always about you”/

I think we should buy them by the thousands and then organize protest marches against the illegal immigrant problem. March on the Capital, march on Lowes and any other major company that has sold us down the river for the sake of greed.

Target excutives are weenies. I cannot believe that they caved on something so trivial. I am so mad about this that I will never shop Target again. In fact, I live in Minnesota and will never go to any event in the Target center again either. You lose this time Target. Better watch out for those Zombie Rights groups. BTW - I am going to be a Target Executive Weenie for Halloween this year.

American October 18, 2009, 9:37 AM

Target - you caved because “Some customers say they will refuse to shop at Target Stores until the costume is removed from the site and an apology is issued.”? You need to do some analytics on your customer profiles! I would bet my life savings that your customer majority is not illegal aliens. You have offended the wrong group and you are the loser here. I am not shopping at Target unless you put this costume back and encourage all legal Americans to join me.

Liz October 18, 2009, 12:26 PM

Better yet, why don’t the illegal aliens (immigrants) who are offended by this costume boycott our entire country and go back to your country where you are a legal citizen!!

Scott October 18, 2009, 1:27 PM

I agree with the other comments. We are supposed to be a nation with free speech and maybe just a little bit of a sense of humor.

Personally, I’d love to see Target selling an Iraqi Orphan costume. It would have a place to tuck one arm in like it got blown off, on the front it could say “Iraqi Orphan” and on the back “Nobody loves me anymore.”

I think a costume covered with dust that says “WTC” on the front and “9/11/2001” on the back would be funny. When you press a button it could cough, spit out some smoke and cry “Help my friend, she’s still in the building!”

I think an Auschwitz costume could be funny too, if it were done in a tasteful way.

Or maybe an Illegal Alien “left behinder” combo set. One costume is the mommy being deported. Another costume is the four year old US citizen daugther who cannot be deported (she’s crying “don’t take my mommy!!”) and the last costume is the BCIS agent protecting our nation from the illegal scum who prop up our agriculture business by picking fruit in the San Joaquin valley.

There is so much anti-immigrant sentiment in this country today that dehumanizes the illegal and legal immigrant experience. Conservative radio talk shows and the likes of Lou Dobbs villianize them as responsible for nearly every ill in our society, when most are good, hard working, contributing, tax paying people. Racism and brutal, inhumane hate crimes are rampant. It is way too sad to be funny.

Anonymous October 21, 2009, 8:16 AM

This costume does not bother me at all, I can appreciate it.
The only, truly sad aspect of this whole situation is the waves and waves of people who fail to understand the satire and the message this gimmick sends - the costume itself is every single one of those complaint letters combined and addressed to society.
What is this world coming to?

Josh October 21, 2009, 9:09 PM

Elizabeth, I don’t know how you figure these people who are here Illegally are contributing to our society in anyway. Almost all of the illegals do not pay taxes at all. They work under the table for ridiculously low wages. Putting Americans out of a job. Yes racism I’m sure is a problem in some places, but its only compounded by the people being in this country illegally. The costume was more a slap in the governments face because they are doing little about the immigration problem in this country. Then a a bunch of hippee tree huggin liberals got offended by the term “alien” which if you look the word up in the dictionary is as follows: Alien, a noun, pertaining to a person born in or belonging to country who has not acquired or attained citizenship by naturalization. Yes it also includes a definition relating to E.T. but come on. It’s a costume, meant as a joke. We can’t have fun anymore? Are there laws against that now?? Are we not allowed freedom of speech? Freedom of assembly anymore??

supa January 12, 2010, 2:01 PM

This is exactly why I don’t like illegal aliens.
Now that I’ve read this, I will do everything in my power to support anyone who will fight letting them stay.
