My son was ready for the excitement of the car race that we were heading to at the New Jersey Motor Sports Park. I, on the other hand, was amped about our minivan.
Guest blogger Anita Salerno: As a mom of three, there are always things I am looking for in a vehicle -- and I was excited to drive the Volkswagen Routan. Last Saturday, my family and I received the opportunity to take a three-hour road trip from our home in Westfield, New Jersey, to the New Jersey Motor Sports Park for the 2009 Jetta TDI Cup.
As a fan of the Volkswagen brand already, I was intrigued to try out their minivan model. My 9-year-old son, Camden, loves cars as well, so I couldn't pass up the chance to let him see a car race in person. It was a clean diesel car race, which utilized B5 Biodiesel to fuel the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Diesel race cars. It was amazing that a race car could be eco-conscious -- and my son was able to learn and have fun, which I love as a mother!
The week leading up to the event, Camden was so excited to watch the races, but our drive in the Volkswagen Routan ended up being the highlight of the adventure. We never expected a minivan to be so comfortable and easy to drive, especially for six hours with two kids.
While my husband was driving the vehicle, I explored all of the options in our Routan for the day. Since I have young children with very distinct and strong personalities, I noticed the two DVD screens immediately. My mind instantly relaxed because I knew I could have my daughter and son entertained with their own activities at the same time, which meant no fighting!
As we continued our journey to southern New Jersey, we put many of the Routan's features to good use. The digital screen in the front of the vehicle was easy to navigate, and the U-Connect Bluetooth system allowed us to keep in touch with our little one's babysitter during the long drive in a safe manner.
Overall, our Volkswagen Routan adventure was a huge success. The Routan's drive and handling are excellent, as I would expect from any Volkswagen. It's roomy, and the back seats are easy to fold and store. My 9-year-old son was able to do it on the first try. The electric pop-out back windows are a nice touch, as well as the gear shift being conveniently located on the dash. I also loved the drop-down rearview mirror, allowing the driver to glimpse at the kids while driving.
As far as the event itself, it was very informative and interesting. They explained in detail the car design, fuel economy, and how the green technology works. The drivers were amazing. They took pictures and signed autographs, which made the kids feel like a part of the day. They had a simulator, which my children loved. The race was very professionally set up and executed as well. We felt a connection to the drivers on a personal level, and really had a great day.
I'd recommend the Volkswagen Routan to any mom looking for a smooth and safe ride for her and her family.
