Co-designed by fellow actresses and long-time best friends Daryl Hannah and Hilary Shepard, Liebrary is a bluffing game where players attempt to create the most believable first line of a book.

The two came up with this game while bored on vacation, looking for something the whole family could play. Here's what they had to say about life, friendship, and building the perfect board game.

momlogic: How did the idea for Liebrary come about?

Daryl Hannah: Liebrary is based on an old parlor game from the 1800s where players would pull books off the shelf from their personal libraries. We would always have game nights and play the game in this manner, but you need a wide variety and a HUGE number of books to play, and not every book would have a description or a playable first line! One Christmas we were in Hawaii with a group of friends in a rental house, and we really wanted to play the game, but there were no books! Right then and there, we decided to create a board game! Liebrary would contain hundreds of books in all different categories, with fun, playable first lines, a way to score, and a board to win on!

ML: What is the benefit for children? It seems to really promote literacy and a joy of reading.

DH: Liebrary is hilarious and fun to play, especially with families! It never ceases to amaze us how a 10-year-old can whip our butts, and not just in the children's category, either! Hilary's daughter Scarlett, who was 10 years old at the time, won the round where we played "The Great Gatsby" -- of course, she had never read it, but everyone voted for her fake first line over F. Scott Fitzgerald's actual line!

She also won in the romance category, which was unexpected, to say the least! Liebrary really promotes creativity and joy of reading and writing!

Hilary Shepard: Every time we play the game, people jot down different books they want to read. We even had a friend who wrote a book based on a first line he wrote playing a round of Liebrary! Liebrary is also a great way to interact with your friends and family instead of plopping down in front of a video game or the TV.

ML: What happens at the typical "game night" at your houses?

DH: We love to have game nights -- there is always great food and prizes involved! Most people are so involved in the game, they never even touch the food, and nobody seems to ever want to stop playing! We have silly prizes like crowns and cheese graters, and you would not believe the cutthroat competition that ensued one night in pursuit of that cheese grater!! It was as if it was made out of gold or something! We can always pretty much guarantee our stomach hurts the next day because we've all laughed so much!

ML: What's the best Liebrary sentence that has been made up thus far?

HS: We always save our first lines from past game nights because they are all so hilarious! It's impossible to just choose one!
