Jon Plus ATVs Minus Helmets for His Kids

Yet another parenting demerit for the newly single dad of eight.

Jon Gosselin

This weekend, the former star of "Jon and Kate Plus 8" was seen tooling around his massive backyard on an ATV with his kids. What was missing? No, not Kate -- these days, the two are rarely seen together. Nope, Jon Gosselin's tots were riding around without helmets!

According to the ATV Safety Institute, riding requires protection for head, eyes, hands, and feet against occasional spills, flying debris, or contact with foliage.

Obviously, Jon didn't mean to put his child in harm's way, but we all have to remember that accidents happen, especially on vehicles like these.

Before You Ride
The ATV Safety Institute's Golden Rules:

• Always wear a helmet and other protective gear.
• Never ride on public roads -- another vehicle could hit you.
• Never ride under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
• Never carry a passenger on a single-rider vehicle.
• Ride an ATV that's right for your age.
• Supervise riders younger than 16; ATVs are not toys.
• Ride only on designated trails and at a safe speed.

Would you let your child ride an ATV? Or more to the point, would you let your kid hang out with Jon Gosselin?

give jon a break- at LEAST he was with his kids for a change! sounds like something my husband would forget to do to, men don’t always think about these safety things like women do….

Yet another reason why he shouldn’t be alone with the kids…And you wonder why kate had to yell at him?

Oh come on!! I’ve never seen anyone wear a helmet on a 4-wheeler in real life. And I’ve been around quite a few kids withOUT their parents even on the thing with them. He was in his backyard probably not going fast at all..

While I would rather him put a helmet on his kids when he gives them a ride, at least his is spending quality time with them OFF CAMERA and not that phony baloney product placement stuff Kate does with them on camera.

wow Mom Logic, way to go. YOu couldn’t find another story so you go and try to belittle a man spending time with his kids. I just want to say you did good hiring the writer who wrote this story. hahaha you’re really getting your money’s worth. Just look at the comments that have been written down. Thats enough to say you’re doing a great fantastic job. keep it up :(

Just a note: PA law states that it is ILLEGAL to operate an ATV without a securely fastened helmet. Yes, there is an ATV helmet law, and it applies to private land as well as public. It is enforceable by both state and local police. Fines are $50 - $200 plus the cost of prosecution for the first offense and $100 - $300 plus the cost of prosecution for the second offense.

Jon is spending time with his kids.
Kate is off putting Jon down. When was the last time Kate was having fun with her kids? Unless she is filming she is not around.
I don’t like the way Kate went on national TV and said she would work at McD’s to feed her family. There are so many families struggling and working at these jobs to survive .A nurse making statements like this is sad.
Its time for the show to end!
At least the kids have one parent around!!

Wow, it seems that every little thing Jon does or does Not do people have to jump on him and say he is a bad person. Yes kids safety should come first, but be honest here how often do you see any one with head gear on while on a 4-wheeler. never have i worn a helmet and i was always on atv’s and what not, do i say my mom and dad were bad because of it? No! some people are really getting all high and mighty and think that everything has to be done by the books, well im sick of it, sick of this gossip and pointing fingers. i almost feel bad that i have to raise my kids in a world like this. sorry im ranting just getting sick of how people are acting.

Yes, the kids should be wearing helmets but how fast was he going? Was he just slowly moving along?? If so I wouldn’t be too worried about it!!!! Give him a break. If he was zipping around like a nut then he put his kids in serious danger not having a helmet on but I really doubt that he was riding around fast with a little kid on his lap.

WHO CARES????

Wait, so let me see if I am reading the previous comments correctly. Jon gets a pass because he’s a guy — we can’t expect him to remember to protect his kids from being killed. Furthermore, it is OK for him to endanger his kids because, look, he’s actually spending time with them. Oh, and Kate is not a great parent either, so Jon is totally allowed to engage in criminal child endangerment if he wants to. OK, wow, I guess these red state types really do have different standards than the rest of us.

mom by the rules December 30, 2009, 10:50 AM

So do his kids have to wear seat belts in the car or can he disregard that rule too? Since after all at least he’s spending time with him, and I’m sure he’s just going the speed limit, right? A rule is a rule, ATVs should be treated like any other gas powered machine-with caution! My ex has been riding them for years yet had one roll on him. good thing he was wearing a helmet when it rolled over his head! Quit making excuses for people! Just cause others have done something and not gotten hurt doesnt mean you shouldn’t follow the rules. I’ve never caused an accident, so does that mean I shouldn’t wear a seatbelt or follow the rules of the road? get real people.

Hey Dude,
Your style of presentation is very impressive. The meaningful contribution of your mind reflects on those people who are looking for helments for kids. I would like to tweet on it and keep spying at every moment you blogging.
