Want a Sugar Daddy Ken Doll?
To celebrate Barbie's 50th birthday, Mattel has introduced the "Sugar Daddy Ken Doll."
Single Mom Seeking: Mattel claims the doll's name stems from Ken's dog, named "Sugar." But here at momlogic, we're a bit skeptical.
For starters, Sugar Daddy dating sites -- such as SugarDaddyForMe.com -- are loving the press this is getting them.
"We certainly are happy when the concept of a sugar daddy relationship gets mainstream exposure and endorsement like this," says Gautam Sharma, founder of SugarDaddyForMe.com.
Likewise, Sharma adds that "I am sure they love the free publicity" sites like his are giving back to Mattel.
"I am sure that Mattel is getting a lot more publicity using the 'Sugar Daddy Ken' name than if they had issued a 'Wealthy Ken' doll, don't you?" he says. "But really, what is the difference? A Sugar Daddy is merely a successful man who likes to spoil and pamper his woman -- and help her and take care of her in any way he can, including giving her his help and support financially because he is able to."
Mattel says the dolls will be sold in 2010 to adults. But we wonder: how many adults out there are really going to buy these Sugar Daddy Ken dolls? Seriously?
"We think that lots of women will buy them as a joke" says Sharma, "but that underneath, they really would love to have a real Sugar Daddy -- not just a toy doll."
Will this be on your "must-have" list?
At this point, we're wondering what might be next. Will Mattel soon be unveiling a Barbie Sugar Momma?
