Teacher Reassigned Over Racy Essay

"He's a really, really good teacher," she said. "He understands. You can speak to him about anything."
But school officials say Van Voorhis may have gone too far when he gave his 11th graders a graphic short story about masturbation involving a carrot, among other things.
After learning of the explicit reading, the Department of Education re-assigned Van Voorhis to an administrative office, pending the outcome of an investigation.
Some students, meanwhile, have launched a Facebook campaign to "Save Mr. V."
"I don't feel there was nothing bad about it," Henriquez said. "It was just a story. We read it outside of class, so why can't we read it inside class?"
But Louella Hatch, who has a grandson in the tenth grade at the school, isn't laughing.
"If it is true, he can't still be around the school, you know?" she said.
Alec Nightengale is also an English teacher at the school and a personal friend of Van Voorhis. He says his colleague deserves to be back in the classroom.
"I've known him all my life, and I know he had the best of intentions," Nightengale said. "And he only wants what's best for the kids."

Chuck Palahniuk best short story actually. My son read it and so did I.
So they have a problem with this, but it was fine for us to read stories like Hamlet and The Lottery when I was in 9th and 10th? Yet another case of parents overreacting and overprotective. Save Mr. V, he’s obviously a good teacher if the kids are responding to him this way. We need more like him.
I just read this story, it is EXTREMELY inappropriate for a teacher to assign this in school. I understand why he was reassigned, I am a very liberal person but this is pushing it WAY too far.
I also just googled this story and read it and I tell you, I would be pissed if my child read this trash in school. What was this teacher trying to get out of his students by having them read this…maybe more helpful suggestions on better ways to masturebate? Maybe he was trying to see what kids might be okay with it? Maybe he was looking for victims? Maybe he just has a sick mind and “gets off” by exposing children to this filth?
I don’t see how you can justify this teacher’s behavior if you’ve actually read the short story. It’s far from appropriate…
After reading this article and the comments, I HAD to read the story. Google “GUTS” by Chuck Palahniuk and see for yourself. I am traumatized. There is NO reason this should be read in school. I thought maybe it just made a reference to masturbation, but the ENTIRE story is about masturbation. And it is graphic and disturbing.
I don’t know if the teacher is a “good” teacher or not, but he definitely made a mistake with this story.

You have to be kidding me!He gave his 11th graders a graphic short story about masturbation involving a carrot, among other things.
Kids are having babies and they are worried about this??
Its a book and our kids are going to see much more than this or already have. These are 16,17 and some may be 18 years old ,do we really think the kids don’t know about masturbation?
Its sad that he has to lose, because the kids seem to like him as a teacher and he is open with the kids.
