4-Year-Old Suspended for Long Hair

Is this okay?

taylor pugh

Taylor Pugh has been suspended from pre-kindergarten because of his long hair. He now spends his days in the library, serving an in-school suspension.

At Floyd Elementary School in Texas, boys' hair must be kept out of the eyes and cannot extend below the bottom of earlobes or over the collar of a dress shirt.

Last month, a seventh-grader in the same school district was sent home for wearing black skinny pants. His parents now homeschool him.

Do you think Taylor should be suspended for his long hair, or is the school district overreacting?

Two thoughts: I would venture to guess that the parents have a lawsuit, should they so desire, against the school district. AND how do you suspend a pre-kindergartner? I mean, exactly what WARRANTS that? Pre-K is PLAY & SOCIALIZATION. How exactly is a haircut getting in the way of that? Not that I can understand how a haircut gets in the way of much these days, but that’s beside the point.

You can’t even pee wrong at school anymore.

We send our kids to school to learn, not to be made a poster child. The parents should sue the school and the teacher!

Queen Bee December 17, 2009, 12:58 PM

Even though the suspension is dumb they obviously have a stated rule about hair. If you don’t like it don’t send your kid there. The school is entitled to have rules and to enforce them. If your willing to abide by them then do it. Don’t act shocked when you get the consequence of your actions. There is no merit to sue the school. Try to change the rule if you don’t like it. That’s what school board meetings are for. If you don’t want to take the time to do it, make sure your kid’s hair is cut according to the school’s standards before you send him and buy your kid black pants that aren’t shiny. Have a little responsibility please.

I agree with Queen Bee. The school stated that they have a policy on how their students are to wear their hair. This mom should have just trimmed it enough to satisfy the school. Now her child is paying the price for it.

Is this a public school? If so, is the school recieving federal funds? Because this is (weird)very odd to take on fashion issues~when officials should be focusing on~ I dont know teaching them, instead of critiqing their fashion sence?

Well, while I find it odd that they would have a rule about hair if it was stated and the parents were given a rule book and acknowledge that they received it then its their fault. On the other hand if they were not then the school is negligent for not informing the parents on school rules. Why they have a rule about hair cuts, who know but if there is not legitimate reason then they need to scratch that rule from the policy. When I was in high school we had that issue with wearing sandals. But the students got it over turned. But the school had a legit reason still. Haircut, why?

Schools are getting way too picky these days. I like his hair and think he’s a cutie.

His name is Taylor? They should just say that he is a girl. No haircut requirements for girls!

paul keith December 17, 2009, 4:53 PM

yes they are way over reacting i think people should be able to wear there hair as long as they want

This is how Adam Lambert started. His parents let him go Hog wild.

what is wrong with them this isn a free country who do they think they are saying how your hair should be these people need to get a life and jump into the 21st century… no he should not be suspended it’s a stupid rule and they need to wake up there is nothing wrong with long hair on a boy it’s just hair and to do something like that to a child is just wrong and for the other kid with the clothes who do they think they are you should be able to wear anything you want within reason I could see if he had body parts hanging out or his pants falling off of him but come on this is sad to think they tell you how to wear your hair and what kinds of clothes you can wear what do they think they own you or something get a life and wake up it’s the 21 1st century for god sakes.

GIVE ME A BREAK! Where is Michael Bolton when we need him? Geez…

The parents are breaking the rules and the poor child is paying the consequences. Some folks pick the most random and useless battles. I feel sad for this kid. Shame on the parents.

Proud Mama of a BOY with Longer Hair December 17, 2009, 9:54 PM

I have a son with hair that is longer than most of the boys (with country buzz cuts!) at his school. I think it is ridiculous to try to tell someone how long their hair can or can not be unless it is causing a disruption!!! Girls with long hair don’t cause a disruption - why should the boys with longer hair? Get a life and focus on the children’s education instead of meddling in the private life of families!! And….if the school has that rule…it was probably made back in the day when people were ignorant to equality for all races and genders! My child goes to school to learn academics-not to learn to judge other’s looks or to be judged by small-minded staff, children or other parents! Give me a break!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rachel December 18, 2009, 1:18 AM

Once again, as QueenBee already mentioned, kind of lesson is that sending the child? If you don’t like/agree with a rule, you get to act like a baby about it and do what you want anyway? There are processes in place throughout school districts to address change and express concern. Utilize one of them, please.

True Mom December 18, 2009, 5:48 AM

It sounds like this child may learn more being in the library all day…

Mother Nature December 18, 2009, 6:34 AM

I would be willing to guess if we were to visit each and every teacher or staff member of this school, we as parents could pick them apart and criticize their attire or choice of hair style as well. Perhaps this is what this precious little guy’s parents should do, requesting that each teacher or staff member be suspended with out pay until they can dress themselves professionally. Shame on this school for loosing sight of what’s really important for this child and every child in their school district. AN EDUCATION!

Kim December 18, 2009, 7:10 AM

Are you kidding me with this?
Wow. That is ridiculous. And in other school districts you can’t kick kids out of class for cussing at the teacher or bullying their classmates.
What ever happened to common sense?

Gail Cooke December 18, 2009, 9:30 AM

Who exactly are these people to dictate how long a child’s hair is? And what kind of ridiculous organization would suspend a child that young? I was under the impression that the US was a free country. Personally I’d tell them to go to Hades.
