Sun-Sentinel: Bryant Gumbel shocked Kelly Ripa and a national audience Tuesday morning, disclosing on Live With Regis and Kelly that he had recently undergone surgery for malignant cancer. The treatment included removing a part of his lung.

The revelation came during the usually frothy host chat. Gumbel was filling in for Regis Philbin, who had hip replacement surgery last week.

Ripa mentioned that a feature on the show would be the two of them learning dance steps from Dancing With the Stars Julianne Hough. "I can't dance," Gumbel said.

Thinking he meant he was reluctant to do something he's not good at, Ripa persisted.

"I can't," the 61-year-old Gumbel repeated. "I have a note from my doctor."

Gumbel then elaborated. "Two months ago, I had cancer surgery." He said he chose to keep it private. He didn't even inform the staff of Real Sports, the award-winning HBO series he hosts.

"They opened up my chest. They took a malignant tumor and they took a part of my lung and some other goodies," Gumbel said.

The prognosis so far has been encouraging. "The pathology on most of the stuff came up benign but enough of the aggressive cells had escaped the tumor that it warranted some treatment. I went through that and it's over now. We hope that it's over and done."
