More Schools To Try 4-Day Week

Superintendent Bennie Newton said the district has lost almost $165,000 in revenue this year when compared to the same time in 2008.
At least three other school districts in the state also have opted for four-day school weeks. School boards in Prue and Barnsdall, both in Osage County, and in Gore in Sequoyah County have made similar moves.

This is going on in my school district and in a nearby school district in an attempt to address funding reductions for school in our state. It is tough for parents who work and there are discussions all over the place about the issue.
It should be understood that the teachers are not getting paid for those days off…at least not in my area. They took pay cuts for that lost time teaching and the reduced days gives them less time to complete the same instructional objectives for kids. While the time to do the job was reduced the expectation for what must be accomplished was not adjusted to reflect the reduced instructional time. So, in short, teachers took a pay cut and have to just as much in less time.
I would love it! I enjoy both my children and would even consider transferring them to a school with this schedule!
Hate, hate, hate the idea. My school system is considering this. The school day is longer therefore I’d have to get my kids up before it’s daylight and then I’d get them home after the sun sets. For my little one, since I teach, he’d be in daycare from six thirty in the morning to seven every day. It would be his bed time by the time we got home. I’d never see him and he needs his mommy time. I’d miss him like crazy four days a week. Also, my older son’s after school baseball lessons would be gone. No time for daily recreation and exercise. Family time would be shot since my husband still has to work that extra day of the week. Also, the kids in school are usually exhausted the last hour of the school day. Now they would have two extra hours a day of school work and then on top of that, homework. Can you say STRESS! They would not even focus by the end of the day. Ugggh, just the thought scares me to death.
Just what the children in the United States need. More free unsupervised time away from an educational environment. No wonder we have children being left behind as the average school year is 136 days per year. That is similar to working a part-time job and expecting a quality lifestyle.Let’s emphasize the importance of lifelong ed!!!

I would love it, it would give me more time to spend with my daughter but I can only imagine the difficulties this would pose to a family where both parents work outside of the home.
