When Socks Are the Pits

Momlogic's Julie: Last night was the third night of Hanukkah. Because we have EIGHT nights of presents, they can't all be extravagant. I had picked up a cute pair of Juicy Couture socks for my 6-year-old daughter and wrapped them for her third-night present.

When she saw them, she burst into tears! I guess socks was not her idea of a good gift.

I felt kind of bad I had given socks as a gift, but then figured it might teach her a good lesson. We talked about the kids who have no socks or warm clothes, and how she should be grateful for ANY gift she receives, no matter how small.

But still ... I might rethink giving socks next year.

Have you ever had a Hanukkah or Christmas FAIL in the gift department? Tell us about it.

Juicy Couture socks? Did she also explain that the price of one pair of socks could feed a family of four for dinner?

We also celebrate Chanukah, but we don’t give our kids the expectation that they are getting eight presents from us. That’s not what the holiday is about. We keep the focus on being together as a family and the miracles in our lives.

Congratulations, your child is spoiled.

Any child that cries because her gift isn’t good enough needs her parents to reevaluate the values that they’ve taught her.

For our Christmas Stockings as kids my mom would always give us practical things. Every year we got a toothbrush, tooth paste, deoderant (when we were older), SOCKS, and underpants. She would always add a fun cheap-o toy. But we always loved our stockings and the tradition will be past on this year with my sons first Christmas.

Congratulations, you have a normal six year old. Not spoiled, just young. My daughter has asked for big expensive things sometimes, and we try to get them, sometimes as a gift from 4 or 5 people (no-one is loaded) and then, frequently, she doesn’t care for it after all. This year she wants a circular saw (she is 24). I’m not sure. Maybe a pair of socks, or yarn to knit her own … ?

No 6 year old likes clothing, including socks as a gift. It has to be a TOY!

I would never buy Juicy Couture anything for a child. Jill is right. You could have spent the $$$ more wisely…

Why does it offend some people when others get their children nice gifts. My 2 are getting notebook computers this year so they will stop snatching my laptop every time I put it down b/c they don’t want to go upstairs to use their desktops.
Hate on that, whoever.

tenmom - It’s the “have nots”

Jill December 15, 2009, 2:37 PM

I’m not hating on that… And I’m not a “have not” person either… Its not about “nice things”… Its about the value of the item. One pair of Juicy Couture socks are $25. You can get a pair of socks, same shape and style from Target for $3. I understand getting kids laptops for Christmas- its expensive, but worth the expense because of the technology involved- I’m sure the laptops will be used to benefit their lives. My point is that a pair of $25 socks- even if it says “Juicy” isn’t worth it. I guess I’m not brand- conscious when I buy socks. More to the point, does a 6-year-old know who/what Juicy Couture even is?

Actually, a pair of Juicy Couture socks are $8 right now at Neiman Marcus online, with free shipping AND free gift wrap. Not exactly cheap for socks, but definitely affordable!
