Child Left on Bus, Weather Sub-Freezing

WIFI: Termination is the recommendation being made for a substitute bus driver who left a child on the school bus in sub-freezing temperatures.

The incident took place Tuesday afternoon.

Chris Daughtry, the Tippecanoe School Corporation Director of Transportation, said a second grade girl from Woodland Elementary fell asleep during the bus ride home, then awoke alone in the transportation parking lot.

The child then walked across old U.S. 231 to Walgreens where a good Samaritan helped her call for help at around 5:00 p.m.

Daughtry said what happened was unfortunate and intolerable.

"When they got here to the base, they simply failed to walk the bus to determine if there were any children left on the bus. That is in direct violation with TSC policy and it is also against Indiana code," said Daughtry.

Daughtry said the young girl is okay and did not receive any medical treatment.

The Lafayette police department expects to be done with their investigation shortly. The substitute driver could face additional charges and a $500 fine for failing to check for children due to a state law was passed last summer.

I don’t get what is so difficult about checking the bus for sleeping kids. It is not like the bus is the size of a football field, it is only a few feet. Are the drivers really this lazy? It is a shame that so many districts cannot get good, responsible people for this job.
