He credits strong family ties in surviving his abduction.
On the third anniversary of his rescue, Shawn Hornbeck -- who was kidnapped in the fall of 2002 -- has recorded a public service announcement to help keep other kids safe.
The 18-year-old (who is now in college) appeared on the "Today" show this morning to share his story of survival:
