Can You Guess What Food This Is?

We promise, it's NOT what you think.

Mechanically Separated Chicken.jpg

It looks like it would taste yummy, doesn't it? Before you grab a spoon and start digging into what looks like frothy strawberry soft-serve ice cream, you should know this: it's chicken.

Wait, did you just put down your spoon?!

How, you ask, could chicken look so disgusting? It's the result of mechanically separating chicken. By using a machine that scrapes the bones completely clean, the meat industry saves big bucks. The end result can be found in our kids' favorite food: hot dogs, bologna, and chicken nuggets. Ick.

Wow, and we thought Chicken in a Can was bad.

I dont care how its made, as long as it tastes good and doesnt have any immediate negative affect on me, I’ll eat it.

I’ll still eat hot dogs and chicken nuggets, but not any time today…my stomach just did flip-flops. Meat is not supposed to be in liquid form. Anyone who’s tried meat baby food will back me up on this one. Blech.

Totally rethinking hot dogs and chicken nuggets.

Gail Cooke January 27, 2010, 7:27 PM

Mmmm….quality manufactured food!

Jonathan January 27, 2010, 10:15 PM

I don’t see what the big deal is.

It’s still chicken. I look at it as LESS WASTE.

Maybe all of the tree hugging hippies will eat it now. It’s better for the enviroment!

It’s chicken people, no matter how you look at it.

Are people seriously upset over this?
This = not a problem.
Meat is meat… Hot dogs and chicken nuggets aren’t much more unhealthy than eating a juicy chicken leg.
It’s still food. I find it hypocritical that people look at this and think “Oh this is so disgusting” when, in reality, it’s just as unhealthy as anything else. Don’t get caught up in appearances, this is a lesson your mom should have taught you years ago.

this is called a forcemeat and it involves pureeing meat with a stock, seasoning and usually heavy cream nothing unusual here even the best restaurants make forcemeats.

It may be “chicken”, but the chicken we eat today is not real chicken anyway. It’s genetically modified mutant chicken that’s so sick from all the growth hormones that they have to pump it full of antibiotics. I recently became a vegetarian. I would gladly continue eating meat if the meat we consume was the real thing and not mutant animals created by a food industry with horribly offensive, cruel, and unhealthy practices. To each his own, of course…

OMG! Thats meat? I thought it was cotton candy lol

So people get all bent out of shape about chicken based meat paste, but I bet a lot of the more epicurean of them have no problems with fois gras or other pates. Same thing.

Marianne Johnson February 17, 2010, 10:04 PM

You’re right, Chairman! People eat organ meats all the time and it’s supposed to be sophisticated and worldly. How about some caviar to go with that?

Don’t be so sure.

Without knowing the source of that picture (who shot it, and where), we should all be hesitant to believe that the stuff in the picture really is Mechanically Separated Chicken. Looks more like icing, or candy.

I’m guessing the pic is a hoax. (Note that the source cited above doesn’t tell where the pic is from.)

When it comes to info on the web: “buyer beware!”

An impressive share, I just given this onto a colleague who was doing somewhat analysis on this. And he actually purchased me breakfast as a result of I discovered it for him.. smile. So let me reword that: Thnx for the treat! But yeah Thnkx for spending the time to debate this, I really feel strongly about it and love reading more on this topic. If doable, as you become experience, would you mind updating your weblog with extra particulars? It is highly useful for me. Big thumb up for this weblog publish!
