6-Year-Old Student Handcuffed, Committed by School

NBC Miami: A little girl was sent to an adult mental institution for being unruly.

Port St. Lucie's school system has an interesting way of dealing with disruptive students.
The same school district that allowed an autistic boy to be voted out of kindergarten class for being a bit unruly has a far worse penalty for 6-year-old little girls.
Handcuffs and straight jackets.
A Parkway Elementary School student was cuffed and sent to an adult mental institution earlier this month after she through a temper tantrum in the middle of class, reports TCPalm.com. The little girl was handcuffed by a Sheriff's Office deputy "for her safety and the safety of others," a police report said.
The incident report said the girl was hitting school officials and screaming, although it's unclear what brought on the tantrum. The handcuffs worked because the little girl calmed down after an hour in the tight silver bracelets, but her troubles were just beginning.
A few days later, the girl had another fit, allegedly hitting the school's principal in the stomach. The principal, who was eight months pregnant, called the same deputy, who then tossed the little girl in the back of his patrol car and transported her to the local adult mental institution.
"These people are going to the extreme," said Kathy Franklin, the girl's mother.
School board officials will most likely investigate the incident, much like they did when 5-year-old Alex Barton was voted out of class two years ago for being disruptive in class. Turns out Barton had a form of autism and his mother is now suing the school board.

for real… the school officials would not have resorted to that if it wasn’t necessary, the way the article is written makes it seem like handcuffing her was the wrong thing to do, but she hit a pregnant woman in the stomach, there’s not a whole lot else you can do to discipline a child like that. my question is if DHS is going to be looking into her household, what kind of disciplinary action are her parents taking with her misbehavior that is letting this behavior persist?
I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT I AM ONLY THE SECOND TO COMMENT ON THESE ATROCITIES!! ARE YOU PEOPLE (OUT THERE WHO READ THIS- JUST GOING TO TURN AWAY?) EVERYONE SHOULD BE AGAINST THESE HORRENDOUS ACTS TOWARD CHILDREN AND LOOK TO THE PARENTS —- THE PARENTS—- ASK HOW THESE CHILDREN GOT “THIS WAY” REMEMBER ALWAYS—- CHILDREN LEARN WHAT THEY SEE —HEAR—AND “FEEL”!
The wrong “through” was used in your interesting story. She actually “threw a temper tantrum.”
They have no right to send the child where they *think* is the correct place because *they* can’t handle her.
That school district is abusing their power as a school. Their role is not to belittle and exclude but to teach.
I would definitely not trust my child being enrolled in that school district. Let’s not hope she’s too wild and they send her to the zoo.
I wouldn’t personally want -my- child handcuffed and sent to a mental institution, but honestly, where in the world is this child’s disciplining? Somethings not quite right here, for a 6 year old girl to act out in such an extreme way. My school district probably would have sent her home and told her parents she could not return until she was more manageable. You have to think about the fact that her acting this way sends out a horrible message to the other students, and disrupts the entire class. I doubt this was the first and second incident at all.
Basically, not enough of the facts are included in this story to really say if the school went too far..

I’m a special ed teacher and taking kids to the psych ward does happen. The PET ,Psychiatric Emergency Team, is called and the kid must go. Some kids need to go. School isn’t the place for them. Maybe a private non-public school would be best for the girl. Would you want a kid punching your unborn baby?
