McQueen was believed to have become depressed following the death of his beloved mom, Joyce, a week ago.
The British fashion designer Alexander McQueen has been found dead at his London home at the age of 40.
"Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee (Alexander) McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand, has been found dead at his home," his family said in a statement to People. "At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee's family."
"Lee's family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this," the statement continues.
McQueen was found dead in his home at 10:20 a.m. Officials say that his death "is being treated as non-suspicious at this time."
Some reports, however, say that McQueen hung himself just a week after his mom died. On Feb. 3 he posted the following on Twitter: "I'm letting my followers know [that] my mother passed away yesterday if ... she had not [had] me nor would you ... RIPmumxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx."
Some of his most devoted celebrity clients include Lady Gaga and Madonna.
But McQueen also designed for the masses: His Target line hit stores last March.
It breaks our hearts that he couldn't go on after his mom died. RIP, McQueen.
