High School Diploma in Two Years?

High school sophomores in eight states now have the chance to earn their diploma two years early and head straight to college. Is it a good idea?

students taking a test

The NY Times reports several U.S. high schools are now offering students the opportunity to graduate in just two years by simply taking board exams to earn their diploma early.

Though the intention of the National Board of Education is to help unmotivated and troubled students get through to college and into careers, the program raises some concerns. What tenth grader is ready for college, especially if they are already struggling with their high school courses? If these kids are really struggling, what good is a board exam going to do? Aren't these the students that need the extra two years of high school?

The fast track approach is already in place in North Carolina high schools and seven additional states have pilot programs operating in 10 to 20 schools. The idea is that rather than earning credit, students function on a "move-on-when-ready" system, mastering a subject then taking the exam and heading to college earlier.

What do you think? Would you let your child go to college after jst two years of high school?

1) this is how education should be—individualized, move ahead when ready type environment. 2) freshman GE classes are no more difficult than senior year classes (and may even be easier if you’re in senior AP classes). I didn’t have this option; instead I dropped out and did distance learning classes from a university as my “home school” curriculum, took the GED and ACT, enrolled in a community college clear across the country and moved there right after my 17th birthday. After 2 years, I transferred to a well known distinguished university and graduated with a degree in education. I really have no regrets about missing my last 2 years of high school. So much time is wasted in the education systems that if a person is bored and wants to move on to something that counts for something, why hold him/her back just so he/she can get a class ring and go to senior prom? Those things held no interest for me, so I paved my own way but would have preferred something like this if it was available.

I can’t say that I learned a whole lot more between 10th grade and 12th grade. Learning is not “one size fits all” If the student has the grades, maturity and can pass the tests and classes why not. Young people are having to get out on their own and join the work force mutch earlier why not give them the option to graduate earlier and go to college.

I would love for this program to be available to my daughters. My 6th grader reads at 11th grade level, my 4th grader at 10th grade level. My older girl was in the gifted program in public school, as is my younger daughter but it was inadequate to say the least.
I was once told by a public school teacher that they can only teach as “fast” as the “slowest” learners can learn. That isn’t fair to the gifted students.

I think this is a great idea my daughter could get started working on the things that are really going to impact her late in life rather than focusing on something that some out of touch BOE wants her to work on. Besides most 12th graders graduate with an 8th grade education anyway so whats the difference.

some teenagers are ready. In Washington State, there is a program called Running Start, where students can earn dual highschool/college credits at the local community college for free. It was an amazing and difficult experience, but starting the Running Start program taught me a lot more about how to be a responsible adult and how to deal with the college workload than our public high school. We either need better highschools or we need to have the Running Start program in every state.

I think that kids learn a lot more than their subject matter in high school. I can’t imagine finishing up and being done after 10th grade. My children have done a lot of maturing in those last two years.
