KTLA: A homeless man was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a 6 year old girl from her mother aboard a Metro bus, according to a sheriff's deputy.

In the early Sunday morning hours, a homeless woman and her daughter boarded a Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus in downtown Los Angeles.

The woman said she must have fallen asleep, and when she woke up at 4:00 a.m. her daughter was gone, said Deputy Jeff Gordon of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.

After the woman alerted the driver who then alerted the MTA bus dispatch center and the Sheriff's Department, nearby deputies joined in to find the missing girl.

The woman told deputies that before she fell asleep she saw a homeless man on the bus whom she knew, but was not friends with, Gordon said. She noticed that the man was also gone when she noticed her daughter was missing, and gave deputies the man's description.

Around 2 hours later another MTA bus driver spotted two people matching the description of the suspect and child, and alerted police that they were aboard his bus at Vermont Avenue and 120th Street, Gordon said.

The suspect was caught and arrested by deputies. He was identified as 60 year old John Thomas.

The 6 year old girl was reportedly unharmed, and was taken into protective custody.
