Nintendo DS in Bath: Parenting FAIL

This could have taken my daughter's life.

Guest blogger Margaret: Yesterday, my 6-year-old daughter was taking a bath. I stepped out of the room to get a towel from the dryer, and when I came back in, she was playing her Nintendo DS while still in the tub.
I lost it.
What if it was plugged into the charger? (It wasn't, THANK GOD.)
What if she had dropped it in the bath if it had been plugged in?
What if she had DIED?
I felt like I have told my kids a million times never to have electronics near water, but through her sobs, my daughter kept saying: "I didn't know! I didn't know!"
And what if she DIDN'T know? What if she hasn't heard or understood my warnings?
Does she know not to stick a fork in the toaster ... or not to put keys in a electrical socket ... what else does she not know that could take her life?
I feel like I am one of the most overprotective mothers on the planet, but this was a horrific wake-up call.
That’s because kids are so addicted to video games that can’t even put them down to take a bath. I’m surprised she doesn’t take it to the bathroom when she takes a poop.
Alot of what ifs there. Did you ever think she knew it wasn’t plugged in so it was ok to play with it in the bathtub? Why overthink it to death?
You’re kidding me, right? This is a joke? Damn, woman, calm the hell down. Who told you that in order to be a good mom you have to be high-strung, high-maintenance, over-the-top hysterical?? There are so many legitimate worries, why panic about things that can never happen? It’s a DS, not a hair dryer. You’re going to turn your daughter into a real whack job. Like you.
Evryday life lessons should be a really fun game to play. I’m sure there’s lot of other thing to put on planing to play it evryday and, bonus, improve parent / child interaction and your child didactic abilities n_n.
Confession: I was filling the tub for my then 18 month old daughter. We were hanging around, waiting, then I felt something between my teeth. I turned around to look in the mirror. 2 seconds later I heard a “splish” sound. That child leaned over the edge of the tub & bloop! She caught herself with her hands, but her head went under the water. She wasn’t upset about it but I freaked the heck out!
When I was a teen, my mother told me to never take my eyes off of that kid(s) for a second. Good advice. In some situations, parents do have to watch kids like a hawk.
Umm…it was only a DS. At any rate, you seem to be pulling yourself down too much. I’m not saying you shouldn’t have taken it away…but the huge production? Watch the kid, warn the kid about the dangers of electricity and make sure there’s no electrical appliances near the tub or where ever water is…but don’t become a HyperParent. Cut yourself a break…
As the first respondent points out, it was impossible for your child to hurt herself in this scenario.
Worry about the actual risks, not the invented ones. First you’ll have to learn to tell them apart yourself, though.

Really? The DS may have broken at worst. It wasn’t plugged in, so who cares. I feel bad for any kid with this type of mother.

If it were plugged in to the charger as long as the charger in the wall socket was in no danger of getting wet the roughly 5 volt DC charge coming from the DS end would be unlikely to harm a child. If it were on an extension cable bringing the AC electric to the bathroom then you would have cause for concern. The main issue in this scenario is your child breaking the DS. I have had each of my 2 children post a Game Boy Micro down the toilet during their first year of life. Boo. :-(
