In an emotional apology in front of family and friends, Tiger Woods apologized to the world.

With his mother Kultida sitting front and center, the disgraced golfer performed the mea culpa of his life. Saying he had let everyone one down, he methodically apologized to his family, friends, business associates, the game of golf -- but mostly to the parents of kids who had looked to him as a role model. Tiger's wife Elin was not present.

"I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated. What I did was not acceptable," said Woods, in the

roughly 20-minute statement that was broadcast all over the world from the clubhouse of the PGA Tour headquarters. He acknowledged he has been receiving in-patient treatment for his "issues" and would return there following the press conference. He did say he planned on returning to the game of golf, but said he was not sure when that would be.

In one of the most emotional passages of the speech, Tiger made it clear his wife Elin was not to blame, nor did she assault him as reported on Thanksgiving night. He said there has never been an incident of domestic violence in their marriage -- "ever." He also targeted comments at the media, telling them it was unacceptable for cameras and reporters to follow Elin and his children to school. He pleaded with the press, "Leave my wife and kids alone."

He finished by asking the public to find it in their hearts to forgive him and to believe in him again ... and to "help" him as he moves forward in life. As he left the room, Tiger's mom whispered into his ear, "I'm so proud of you. Never think you stand alone. Mom will always be there for you and I love you."
