Walmart vs. Whole Foods Grocery Smackdown

A writer at The Atlantic decided to do a blind taste test: Walmart Supercenter vs. Whole Foods. You'll never guess who won.

Corby Kummer of The Atlantic hosted a blind tasting at Fino Ristorante to see if Walmart's groceries could live up to the pricier ones from Whole Foods.

During the blind tasting, sixteen critics, bloggers and food-lovers had no idea that they were eating food from Walmart. The "reveal" happened at the end of the meal.

Who won? Check it out:

First course (almonds and pieces of fried goat cheese with red-onion jam and honey): Walmart

Second course (mixed spring greens in a sherry vinaigrette): Walmart

Third course (chicken served with a poached egg on a bed of spinach and golden raisins): Tie -- Whole Foods for the chicken; Walmart for the spinach

Dessert (panna cotta): Whole Foods

"As I had been in my own kitchen," writes Kummer, "the tasters were surprised when the results were unblinded at the end of the meal and they learned that in a number of instances they had adamantly preferred Walmart produce. And they weren't entirely happy."

Are YOU shocked that Walmart beat out Whole Foods?

Come on- walmart is a huge store but they dont grow their produce in a landfill. Of course it will taste good! it’s the pricing and labor that make people go to one or the other. also the differnt types of food

for scientific integrity the same dishes should have been made with ingredients from either supplier

My family and I always shop at wal-mart. So I’m really not suprised that they “won”, I glad though!

why is this surprising? its like being able to tell the difference between various types of bottled water. So what if it came from Figi or the mountain springs of north carolina or the water purification plant in akron, ohio. Water is pretty much just that-water.

I hate Walmart. Chances are they won, i am not surprised b/c it taste better….almost anything can be scientifically modified to taste a certain way…I will continue to gladly pay more for WF grass fed beef etc, which IMO, taste much better

I would like to see the list of ingriedents. What was put into the jam? The sherry vinaigrette? There are many things to think about beyond taste. Sodium? Preservation? High frutose syrup? Especially, when you are on a restrictive/special diet. You add fat, sugar, salt to most foods and it will taste better.
Oh, and lets not forget the salomella (sp?) outbreak from spinach a short while ago.
And for some, there’s the carbon foot equation. Whole Foods tries to source locally for their regional stores.

I live in a rural area. I don’t even know where I could find a Whole Foods, but I do know that most of what he says about Walmart is true. The only other supermarket around here to chose from is Kroger, and Walmart has a much wider and much more fresh selection. They also have a wide variety of organic foods and much of the produce is locally grown (and labled as such). The produce that is not local is clearly labeled with origin. So for those that live in an urban area, Whole Foods may be better, but for me it just isn’t even an option.
