A Senate committee cleared the way today for a final vote on a measure that will bolster the safety and nutritional value of school lunches.
The measure, called the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, also has provisions for improving training for cafeteria workers and procedures to alert schools more quickly about recalls of dangerous and tainted food.
The bill commits an extra $4.5 billion in funds to school nutrition programs and directs schools and school districts to reexamine and set new and higher nutritional standards for all food served in schools, including food in vending machines.
"This bill ... puts us on the path to ending childhood hunger and addressing the epidemic of childhood obesity," says Sen. Blanche Lincoln, chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee.
The law would also expand the number of kids who are eligible for free or reduced-price meals and highlights farm-to-school programs, which encourage schools to build school gardens and buy produce from local farms.
