MyFoxNy: Police on Long Island are investigating product tampering at several supermarkets.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Suffolk County police discovered tampered packages of Jell-O brand pudding mix.

Nassau County police are also investigating an incident at a Stop and Shop in Woodbury.

It appears the packages were purchased, emptied of their contents and repackaged with another substance. The items were then returned to the stores.

Suffolk County Police Lt. Michael Murphy says what was inside looked like "a fine substance, like aquarium sand."

Investigators pulled all of the product off of the shelves. Preliminary lab tests indicated that the substance was harmless.

The Stop & Shop markets are in Brookhaven, Smithtown, Huntington and Woodbury.

Faith Weiner, Stop and Shop spokeswoman says, "We are working with Nassau and Suffolk county police and cooperating fully."

Police have not made any arrests.

The Suffolk County Police Department reminded the public to exercise caution with any food item if the packaging appears to be tampered with or if it does not appear to be in the original packaging.
