The discussion over health care has become so heated that a fifth grader has become a political target. Yes, a fifth grader!
Eleven-year-old Marcelas Owens seems like an unlikely spokesperson for Obama's health care plan, but once Marcelas' mother died because she had no healthcare, he decided to become politically active.
Marcelas' mom, Tiffany, lost her job in 2006 and subsequently became very sick. She couldn't afford health insurance, so her pulmonary hypertension remained undiagnosed until a visit to the emergency room in 2007. Within six months of her diagnosis, Tiffany died. At that point, Marcelas felt compelled to get involved in advocating for reform in honor of his mother. Senator Patty Murray met him and helped his story about his mom get national attention.
With all that Marcelas has gone through in his young life, he has now become a target of conservative talk show hosts Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck.
