momlogic's Vivian: According to a report in the New York Daily News, the Vatican's second- in-command blames homosexuality instead of celibacy for the child sex-abuse scandals that are rocking the Catholic Church.
In a news conference on Monday, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone said, "Many psychologists and psychiatrists have demonstrated that there is no relation between celibacy and pedophilia," adding, "there is a relation between homosexuality and pedophilia. That is true .... That is the problem."
Chilean gay-rights advocates got right on the horn. "Neither Bertone nor the Vatican has the moral authority to give lessons on sexuality," said Rolando Jimenez, president of the Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation in Chile. "This is a perverse strategy by the Vatican to shirk its own ethical and legal responsibility by making a spurious and disgusting connection."
Then you have a fool like Bill Donohue, head of the Catholic League -- who took out a full-page ad in the New York Times to stick in his two cents. He called this brand of child abuse a "homosexual crisis" because "eighty percent of the victims of priestly sexual abuse are male."
And now, for the pro-gay take: "Even the pope, during his 2008 visit to the United States, said that this crisis is not about gays and lesbians," said Jim FitzGerald, executive director of Call to Action, a Catholic movement working for equality and justice in the Church and society.
WTF? Seriously, hand me a Tums. Damn right, it's a homosexual crisis: It's a crisis that the gay community STILL has to suffer through this kind of moronic, uneducated judgement by religious figureheads out to justify their own criminal behavior.
An a**hole, by any other name, would reek just the same. My gays are some of the most honorable, straightforward, ethical people on this planet, and would sooner perish than harm a hair on a child's head. Homosexuality has absolutely NOTHING to do with how these pedophiles exploit the faith placed in them -- by virtue of their position -- to prey on an innocent child.
Brit authors like Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens want to bring charges against the pope for the scandal. Hey -- I'm all for the Catholic Church being held accountable for these crimes, but I'm not sure that arresting the wrong guy is the answer, either.
What do you guys think?
