Spirit Airline Plans to Add Fee for Carry-On Bags

WQAD: Just when you thought the airlines couldn't charge you for anything else, one airline is now charging travelers to carry-on a bag.
Spirit Airlines announced plans to start $45 on August 1 if you wait to pay for your carry-on luggage at the gate. If you pay ahead of time, the charge is $30.
The fee only applies to bags kept in the overhead compartment. Personal items that fit under the seat will still be free.
Spirit says a new fare reduction means most customers won't really pay more to fly. It says having fewer carry-on bags will help empty the plane faster.
The airline also charges to check luggage, but claims it will lower its checked bag fees and ticket fares.
Although Spirit Airlines promotes it's low cost tickets, when you add up the additional charges, tickets are nearly the same as a premium airline.
Spirit mostly flies out of Florida to Latin America. It does have flights out of Chicago's O'Hare Airport.
