As bizarre as it sounds, the yellow, porous creature featured on the hit Nickelodean cartoon helped a 12-year-old girl assist her friend who began choking on gum during music class at Long Beach Middle School on Tuesday.
The incident occurred when Allyson Golden was laughing at something in music class and a piece of gum became lodged in her throat. Her best friend, Miriam Starobin, immediately jumped into action when she saw Golden in distress.
"I didn't even have to think about," she told PIX 11 News. "I just went over there, picked her up and started performing the Heimlich."
Starobin said she started performing the life-saving procedure after recalling it from an episode of "SpongeBob SquarePants," in which his cranky neighbor, Squidward, choked on his clarinet.
The young girl said she wrapped her arms around Golden from behind and pushed in with clasped hands. The gum ultimately was sent flying across the room, leaving teachers and students stunned.
Starobin, who says she also likes to watch medical shows, is now being touted as a hero by teachers and students throughout the middle school. The girls say their friendship has become stronger.
Golden told PIX News the experience has scared her straight, prompting her to never chew gum in class again.
"My opinion has definitely changed about chewing gum [in class]," she said. "I am never chewing gum ever again."
