Teen Texting Beating Victim Improving

Josie Ratley, the 15-year-old girl who was severely beaten allegedly over a text message, is up and moving around in a wheelchair. She is scheduled for more brain surgery today.

In a video shown on "Today" this morning, Ratley is seen out of her coma and out of bed in a wheelchair.

Josie was waiting for a bus last month outside her Florida middle school when 15-year-old Wayne Treacy, allegedly enraged over a text message about his brother who had recently committed suicide, beat Ratley over the head until she fell on the ground, then stomped on her with steel-toed boots.

Ratley was put in a medically induced coma for nearly a month following the attack. She still cannot speak.

But can she still text?

Wow April 19, 2010, 4:42 PM

…Are you serious? They said she can’t even move her right hand, and shes had TWO BRAIN SURGERIES. I’m pretty sure texting is out of the question…

What is wrong with you for saying that? You’re being sarcastic but some child may never have the same life again

SS April 19, 2010, 6:49 PM

This is horrifying. I don’t see anything funny about a child enraged over the suicide of his sibling acting out violently against another child thus taking away that child’s ability to speak or have a normal life.

How dare you HEE HEE to make such light of such a horrible situation. Josie is in my thoughts every day along with the her classmate the boy who was burned. Also Miss Prince who commited suicide because of bullying. Josie was wrong to text something about the boys brother, but this is ludicris behavior. What are these kids thinking. Where is the value of life gone.

Raven April 20, 2010, 8:02 AM

God help us all - because all these screwed up kids are the future of America.

How messed up!! We need to send all the kids to a military base from middle school til after high school…

Can you imagine what these pathetic kids will be as adults???

A few cases of outright stupidity does not reflect the majority of the population. In this case, the male was far more idiotic for letting his anger overtake his sapience. The female was wrong for provoking the male with his sibling’s recent suicide. Both require serious therapy and human interaction skills.

You never, NEVER make fun of a person’s dead brother, especially after such a short time. Sure, the boy shouldn’t have beaten her up that badly, but who could blame him? He was mentally unstable from his brother’s death and she should have known that.

Wrong April 20, 2010, 6:22 PM

The boy is going to get what he deserves and the girl got what she deserved. She played with fire and she got burned.

wackyteen April 20, 2010, 7:52 PM

the girl was acting wrong.

really, she asked for it and effectively deserved what she got.

well, loss of speech IS a little far but he was TEMPORARILY INSANE at the time.

neither the girl or the boy is right.

answer this:

if someone insulted a deceased, by suicide, member of YOUR family that you felt DEEPLY for what would you do?

Anonymous April 20, 2010, 10:18 PM

I hope his shoe is ok.

Anonymous April 20, 2010, 10:20 PM

Why would you feel bad for that girl. Ok it sucks for her, but seriously what she did was f*cked up. She is one of those girls that makes others feel bad in order to make herself feel good.

If she does pull out of her situation and turns out to be ok, hopefully she learned a lesson.

@Raven Um no they dont, seeing as this is on the news and hundreds of thousands of people are astonished by this act just shows that this is something that is not normal behavior amongst the majority of that age group.. If it was then it wouldnt be such a popular, terrible event now would it? I actually see more crime involving adults. You shouldnt judge all of populace by one person that made a bad mistake. I’m 15 and I know that I’d never do this ever, not everyone is the same..

You reap what you sew…
Hopefully she is ok, but hopefully
society doesnt destroy the young boy…

Paul April 21, 2010, 5:21 PM

This is not reaping what you sew, Karma, or a girl trying to make herself feel good by putting down someone. How anyone would blame her for this, and dare consider what he did to her justified is astounding.

Think about it. You are condenming the actions of a girl who was nearly beaten to death and will never be normal again because she might of text something that was not nice about a tragic event in the life of her attacker. By your own upside down, house of cards logic, you have just done the same thing to her, that you have accused her of doing to him. So by your same close minded views, does this now mean that it is alright for a complete stranger to cripple you with steel toed boots?

This is about humanity people, and the value of human life. This boy that some of you are siding with does not value life one bit. She may of text an insult, but what he did defies reson, and flies in the face of human dignity. His actions are so morally vile that one can not even find the words to explain it.

So you hope that society doesn’t destry the young boy huh? Good luck with that hope, because society has no place for him. He is going to get a life sentece, and we should all feel safer for it.

Comparing insults to his blood thirsty attempted murder is outragous. You should all be ashamed of yourselves for thinking otherwise.

Paul April 21, 2010, 5:43 PM

Again. The girl did not get what she deserved.

No human deserves what that guy did to her. You should dump that stupid “playing with fire and got burned” cliche and point your finger at yourself instead. He stomped her skull apart! Why not let that sink in.

I may be taking a morally superior stance and pointing a finger at some of you myself, but the difference is, you deserve it. How anyone can look at Josie Ratley suffering in that hospital and say to yourselves. ” Oh well, she got what she deserved, I hope she learned her lesson.” Shows a severe lack of human depth.

Since you’re morally imcomplete or just stupid, let me spell it out for you.

A) A person was insulted and had to deal with being angry for a bit.

B) A person got attacked and beaten so bad that they might die, and if they don’t they will have perminant brain damage.

Solution to A) Take a few deep breaths, think it over, chill out.

Solution to B) A life time of being crippled because you have brain damage.

So, did she really get what she deserved?

lulz April 22, 2010, 2:28 AM

Aww, so sad. Looks like she can’t text anymore.

Dario April 22, 2010, 8:27 AM

Hopefully she learns something from this. What a horrible girl. I hope she ends up alright but it’s idiotic to say she didn’t prompt the response.
