Innocent Dance Moves or Totally Inappropriate?

Dr. Wendy Walsh: A few weeks ago, my 6-year-old daughter participated in a cheerleading competition where the music had some explicit lyrics. Afterward, I sent an e-mail to the organizers saying that 5- to 7-year-old girls shouldn't be dancing to most of the music that is on today's radio. Thank goodness the girls were dressed in traditional cheerleading uniforms and their dance moves were age-appropriate. Anyway, I got no response.

This week, a video circulated on the Internet showing a troupe of 7-year-olds from the "World of Dance" hip-hop competition doing a risqué routine to Beyonce's "Single Ladies." These children wore bra tops, booty shorts and high boots and did a bump-and-grind that was fit for a Vegas strip club. I was appalled. What has the world come to?

Sexualizing children to this degree can only hurt all children everywhere. If this is the new benchmark for dance competitions, what are we teaching our baby girls who are just out of diapers? That their value lies in how well they can tempt and engage in sexual provocation?

And I gotta ask: What are we dangling in the faces of men, whose natural responses to visual cues can so easily be triggered? With suggestive material like this available worldwide, it's no wonder that the proliferation of the child sex-slave trade continues. Clearly, Nancy Grace will always have her job on CNN as the voice for abducted little girls.

Shame on the promoters of this event ... and shame on the parents who allowed their girls to dress this way!

Do YOU think this dance routine was out of line ... or no big deal? Comment below.

I am a dancer and have been dancing since the age of three. When I was 7 I was wearing booty shorts dancing like this, the whole deal and that was 20 years ago. So this isn’t a new thing its just that dance has gotten so good and the caliber of these kids is so much better than it was that people are shocked that these young girls dance just like the big girls. This is the dance world I can’t expect people who know nothing of the world to understand it. But I can say, and anyone who is a dancer would agree with me, that dancers especially female dancers know themselves and their worth over other girls their age. Dance empowers girls teaches them so much about themselves, and at such a young age. These girls have so much talent, and I can say from personal experience, that they will be the last girls in high school to be drinking, doing drugs, and having sex. So I say bravo to the the girls, their teachers, and the moms. Keep dancing and I cannot wait to see what these girls do for the dance community in the future! :)

I think the dance, with modest clothes, or the outfits with a more appropriate dance would have been fine, like sol said. Together it’s a bit much. but wow, those girls are very talented.

SAD and SICK. Those parents need help, as will their children, soon. Some dancer actually said “everyone else is doing that.” The age old comment that responsible parents are mature enough to stand firm against. How sad for these girls that their parents are so immature and reckless with their lives.

Leave them alone! June 14, 2010, 6:41 PM

Leave these girls alone! I’m so sick of hearing all of the bashing! Negative ppl on here only wish their daughters could dance that well! They are little girls who are great dancers and if anyone of them were my daughter, I’d be proud! Ppl always have to find something bad to say and it really upsets me.

I think anyone who says this is “okay” needs their head examined. What’s sad is, these girls are obviously talented dancers. I am not talking about the thrusting and flailing, I mean the technical stuff that they execute, they obviously have training. Rather than get them into contemporary dance to hone their skills, their parents have them enrolled in Crotch-Thrusting 101.

I find it disturbing that there are parents that think its okay to have their daughters parade around and do such a sexually suggestive dance.

This is a pedofile’s dream and there is nothing “okay” about that.

i dont see anything wrong with that, their expressing there selves how they want, So i say bring on the dancing children

I honestly think they are just throwing out moves to match the song. If you go to most public middle school parties (i am currently in eighth grade) there is much much much worse. And the sexual moves are only traveling younger and younger. I knew what “grinding” was in second grade, and I have seen people “grind” in 4th and up. The outfits are really skimpy, but i mean the moves aren’t that bad from a teen point of view. but hey, that is just my opinion.

I’m sixteen and I feel uncomfortable watching this. My sister is that age and takes dance, and they don’t do things like this. They probably scored awesome at comp, which means they’ll keep doing routines like this. Anyone who says this is appropriate needs a medical exam. Last time I checked, it wasn’t appropriate for first graders to be dancing like strippers. Call me a prude, I don’t care. This is wrong.

I think that the performance was not at all inappropriate. The only thing I found shocking was how incredibly talented those girls are!

@chels I know what you mean, its hard to find good help these days. People now days just don’t have the work ethic they used to have. I mean consider whoever wrote this post, they must have been working hard to write that good and it took a good bit of their time I am sure. I work with people who couldn’t write like this if they tried, and getting them to try is hard enough as it is.

It’s not inapropiate, it’s perfectly fine. You haven’t seen the dance world. These girls are trying their hardest and working it on stage. They just wanna dance, so let them. I’m a dancer and quite frankly this isn’t the worst of it. I think they are so good, let them be who they want to be. I love dance and I would do this dance anytime and give these girls first place. You go girls!

Joi, a dancer! November 14, 2010, 9:57 AM

This is not inapropriate, this is perfectly fine. They wear these clothes because it is proper dance attire. This is so good, you haven’t seen the dance world yet if you think this is bad. Get over it, I would give these kids first place. These kids just wanna dance, so let them. I love dancing and do this one anytime. You go girls!

I love quotations because it is a joy to find thoughts one might have, beautifully expressed with much authority by someone recognized wiser than oneself.
