D.C. Mom Hits White House Correspondents Dinner After-Parties

Elizabeth Thorp: I hobnobbed with some seriously A-list celebs at the White House Correspondents Dinner after-parties.

ewan mcgregor

The odd double date of Chris Matthews, his wife Kathleen (the Marriott executive) and the [Ewan] McGregors walked the red carpet at the after-party hosted by Capitol File and Bing at the Mayflower Hotel. The foursome followed on the heels of a beautiful but frosty Kim Kardashian, who certainly felt comfortable posing for an intolerable amount of time for photos. She was wearing vintage Valentino, and everyone agreed that she was stunning in person.

I was about to ask her if I could squeeze her famous bootie, but media king Jason Binn was too fast for me, whisking her away to the VIP room. Ashley Judd was beautiful in a long white dress, but she didn't take reporters' questions. Wolf Blitzer -- a co-host of the Capitol File party -- was friendly as always, and told Radar magazine with a shrug that WHCD emcee Jay Leno "was good." Leno didn't drop any F-bombs (like last year's entertainer, Wanda Sykes, did), nor did he make any reference to Conan.

It was interesting to see that many power players avoided the party's red carpet, including Desirée Rogers (who was stunning in a red cocktail dress); Gen. George Casey and his beautiful wife, Sheila (COO of The Hill); and Dan Glickman, the former Secretary of Agriculture and current chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America.

Celebrity chef Bobby Flay, his wife, Stephanie March (from "Law & Order"), Dennis Quaid, designer Tory Burch and Gabourey Sidibe also partied at the Capitol File after-party. Academy Award-nominee Gabourey was "totally down-to-earth, dancing with her boyfriend until late in the night," said one partygoer. Surprise of the night? Gayle King couldn't have been cooler -- posing for photos, talking with partygoers, taking reporters' questions graciously. Lookin' hot too, girlfriend.

Over at the chaotic MSNBC after-party, Katie Couric apparently forgot that she worked at a different network and was getting down on the dance floor. "The fact that it was MSNBC's party didn't keep Katie from dancing barefoot with Morgan Freeman to KC and the Sunshine Band," says POLITICO CLICK reporter Kiki Ryan. Couric's WHCD date, Chelsea Handler, wouldn't dance with Katie, refused to talk to reporters and kept company with what looked like a beefy bodyguard. Maybe still angry about her sexaudition tape?

Earlier on Saturday, media maven Tammy Haddad hosted her seventeenth annual "Garden Brunch." Widely known as the best event of the weekend, it's an outdoor tented brunch attended by the political, media, social and Hollywood elite. People were excited and friendly, and the L.A.-Chicago-Washington contingents mixed it up like old college pals. I was almost the hero of my household since I was "this close" to getting an autograph for my girls from the cute-as-buttons, hand-holding couple Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato. That paper would have equaled total obedience for at least six months! Rosario Dawson (who is always gracious, smart and nice), interjected, "You'll be good for a year with those two autographs!" Sadly, the duo was due to make remarks, and I didn't deliver -- but got a good four minutes of worship from my girls just for meeting them.

Overall, the weekend was chaotic and fun, but it seemed like the electricity and excitement from last year's WHCD events was a bit muted -- maybe, in part, because WHCD invites in general were more difficult to come by. (Thanks a lot, Salahis!) In this new era of transparency, openness and the "People's White House," where are the "people's" WHCD events?

In the meantime, to Graydon Carter: I speak fluent French, I'm a big VF fan, I was a loyal subscriber toCookie magazine before Condé Nast killed it and my last name is "T-H-O-R-P" (no "E"). See you next year? Merci.

What a great blog. I spend days on the internet reading blogs, about tons of different subjects. I have to first of all give kudos to whoever created your website and second of all to you for writing what i can only describe as an amazing post. I honestly believe there is a skill to writing articles that only a few posses and frankly you have it. The combination of informative and quality content is definitely extremely rare with the large amount of blogs on the internet.

Can I make a suggestion? I think youve got something good here. But what if you added a couple links to a page that backs up what youre saying? Or maybe you could give us something to look at, something that would connect what youre saying to something tangible? Just a suggestion.
