Kate Meyers: Here's a dirty little secret: What most moms I know want for Mother's Day is a DAY OFF.
But most moms I know are also so filled with guilt or so afraid to state their wishes that they have trouble asking for it. I used to dream about a morning in bed with coffee, the Sunday New York Times and NOTHING I had to do. The reality of divorce changed all that, and since I have three days a week away from my kids, my wish for Mother's Day now is to have them all day for holding, hugging, laughing and maybe watching an old movie in my big bed while sharing Milk Duds and stale Jujyfruits. That, some homemade cards and a bouquet of daisies would add up to perfect.
My recommendation to any hubby hoping to give his wife a perfect Mother's Day is twofold. First, offer your wife a day off (with the possible exception of a breakfast delivery by the kids). Then leave the house and make sure she will be free of chores, meals or ANYTHING on her to-do list. Second, if you want to give her a gift, ASK her what she wants and follow her directions exactly. If you are like certain men I know and need to feel like you have had a hand in the decision-making, have her e-mail or give you a list of several ideas for things she'd like, and pick one. Along with the kids, make her a card. No need for Hallmark or big ceremony -- though chocolate is always swell.
