Former 'Biggest Loser' Contestant Says Show is Dangerous

Kai Hibbard, a contestant on season three of "The Biggest Loser," told "The Early Show" that "The Biggest Loser" perpetuates myths that hurt people.

Kai lost 118 pounds on the show and gained more than 70 of it back.

She claims:

- contestants on the show were pressured to exercise even when severely injured
- she was pressured to diet by dehydration
- she was encouraged to ignore the advice of nutritionists and listen to the show's trainers
- that "a week" on the show was often longer than a week: "A week is not a week on TV. ... I'm saying that it would be most times longer than a week," she says.

She says she left the show with a very poor mental body image. Once she got home, she considered coffee a meal. Her hair was falling out. Her family even staged an intervention.

Do you believe it?

Yes I believe it. There’s no way that any of the weight loss on that show is remotely healthy for a person. And the things they teach you aren’t applicable to normal life. It sets people up for failure at best when they get home.

I think that they provide you with the knowledge to apply to your life when you get back home. It is extreme there, but when you go to any place that is soley dedicated to working out that is just what you will get. If a person is dehydrated then I do believe that is on them. Water is something that a trainer will never tell you to do without. I do believe that some people go there and think that it is not going to be tough, with that thinking in mind everything would appear horrible to them.

I don’t think it takes info from “an insider” to tell us that show is unhealthy. As a former fitness professional, I can’t watch that ridiculous show. Almost everything they do is wrong.

…and no one thinks it strange that an NBC show is being eviscerated by people from CBS? Please. I’m not going to say that Kai’s allegations don’t have at least some basis in fact, but some of them are pretty obvious (“a week is not a week on TV”, duh! That’s why it’s called EDITING!)

She is the only former contestant to make these claims. Could it be that is it because she is now promoting a diet pill called Livea???!!!! Here is her blog: She may have had a bad experience with the show, but that doesn’t mean the show doesn’t teach “common sense” about eating and exercising.

I have met Dan and Jackie Evans from Season 5 at a “healthy eating cooking show” and they have maintained the weight the lost on the show and are healthy and fit.

I have tried some of the Biggest Loser recipes and they are very tasty. Yes, during the show it seems “extreme” but editing can make things seem like something they are not.

She is “talking bad” about Biggest Loser because she had a bad experience and she is now promoting a different “diet”.

nope i don’t believe it. She’s a sore loser, she gained most of her weight! That’s why she’s bitter or upset. If all of this were really true then more contestants would be coming forward with this info instead of keeping the weight off and living healthy lives.

I do believe there is some truth to Kai’s story. Let’s face it: it’s a TV Reality Show, which at the end of the day is all about ratings and money. Who would watch if the results from “week to week” were not dramatic and spectacular?? The life that the contestants live on the ranch is not realistic as compared to real life, but nor is it if you go on a cruise, or if your child spends the entire summer at a camp. When you apply to be on the programme, you KNOW what you are signing up for. Apparently the majority of contestants have kept most of the weight off, even if the way they got to that point was too hasty, and not recommended by most experts. The important message is that for any chance at optimum health, you need to eat healthy foods and exercise. END OF STORY.

That’s well known that cash makes us independent. But what to do if somebody does not have cash? The one way is to receive the loan and car loan.

Most people, when they criticize, whether they like it or hate it, they’re talking about product. That’s not art, that’s the result of art. Art, to whatever degree we can get a handle on (I’m not sure that we really can) is a process. It begins in the heart and the mind with the eyes and hands.

I love quotations because it is a joy to find thoughts one might have, beautifully expressed with much authority by someone recognized wiser than oneself.

Eccentricity is not, as dull people would have us believe, a form of madness. It is often a kind of innocent pride, and the man of genius and the aristocrat are frequently regarded as eccentrics because genius and aristocrat are entirely unafraid of and uninfluenced by the opinions and vagaries of the crowd.

A formidable share, I just given this onto a colleague who was doing a little evaluation on this. And he in reality bought me breakfast because I discovered it for him.. smile. So let me reword that: Thnx for the deal with! But yeah Thnkx for spending the time to debate this, I feel strongly about it and love reading more on this topic. I’m astounded by people who want to ‘know’ the universe when it’s hard enough to find your way around Chinatown.
