Over 60? Quit Having Kids Via IVF!

Angry Mom: The world's oldest mother has revealed that she is dying -- just 18 months after giving birth at age 70.

Naveen Rajo

Naveen Rajo is now unable to get out of bed; internal bleeding due to the birth and a large cyst on an ovary have left her debilitated.

The same IVF clinic that impregnated Rajo -- the National Fertility Centre in Hisar, India -- is also responsible for impregnating Bhateri Devi. Last month, Devi became the world's oldest woman to give birth to triplets. She's 66. The dad is 73!

You may recall that the woman who held the previous title of World's Oldest Mom -- Spain's Maria Carmen del Bousada, then 66 -- died of cancer just two and a half years after giving birth to twin boys.

IVF clinics: Quit working with women who are over 60! It is not fair to the kids to be born to such elderly parents!

Any 60- or 70-year-old who tries to get pregnant is just being selfish. Sure, you might live to be 100 -- but you might not, and you'll leave your kids orphans!

Even if you do live, how active can a 66-year-old mother of triplets really be? You're cheating your children.

I think that any IVF clinic that impregnates an elderly woman should be shut down. How greedy can you get?! It's shameless!

Do YOU think women over 60 should be allowed to get IVF?

I don’t think any woman should have babies unnaturally. It’s going against nature and there is a reason why some people’s bodies are equipped to reproduce. Adopt instead. That’s what I planned on doing but I ended up conceiving.

Healthy Pregnancy—You are ok with adoption but there are a lot of us who really want to have our own and experience pregnancy and if IVF provides a way to do that, we’ll try it. Personally, I want to try my hardest to have bio kids before we try to adopt. That’s just me though… As for the article, I recently watched something on TV featuring this woman and I was shocked. While I do believe everyone should be able to experience the joys of parenthood, I also believe that the child’s best interest should come first. I’m always saying that age is just a number and I still stand by this. Things need to be taken on a case-by-case basis. I don’t think we should have a number cut-off. It should be based on the person’s health.

No woman in her 60s or beyond should be allowed to have IVF. Our bodies are not meant to carry children at that age. It’s incredibly dangerous to both mother and child and it’s just plain selfish. If a woman that age is desperate to become a mother her only option should be adoption.

I’m so tired of this attitude so many people have that just because a woman wants to be pregnant that she should be allowed to be pregnant. There is such a thing as waiting too long and this is definitely an example of that.

I’m not opposed to IVF and other fertility treatments for younger women but 60 and above is just plain wrong.

I have to say that having a child anytime after your body has gone through menopause is just plain stupid. Menopause is your body’s way of saying, no more reproducing for you, just live what you got left. It’s dangerous to boot. Your body is at a stage that you can no longer handle bearing a child. Things have become worn, both literally and figuratively, with age. Doing IVF after menopause is just selfish.

My aunt had a miscarriage and had her “last” period at 29. She went through menopause yet she started eating tofu and she’s 50 now and she got her menstrual cycle back! My aunts were told they couldn’t have kids without drugs. Hmm…try non drugs first!

KRISTIN do you believe in having Epidurals too?

FORCED PREGNANCY June 15, 2010, 12:55 PM

I knew a couple who were older and did this very thing. Their boy couldn’t talk until he was 7 and he broke every toy he got. Damaging and forcing conception is just plain SELFISH! Survival of the fitness….OR just life support good enough for the world now. Wall-E movie not teach you anything?

The after 60 thing is just not right, period! To the person who said unatural conception should not be allowed….what exactly are you saying about all these beautiful children who have been born into loving wonderful homes to people who did everything in their power to have them? There is a “reason” why their bodies could not do it naturally…..what is that reason? I am pretty sure all the familys whose lives aev been blessed by these children made possible by advanced medicine would disagree. Where is the downside to these sucesses?

We shouldn’t look at this exact case with Western eyes. The fact that this woman is most likely Hindu (as is 90 percent of the population in her area of India) makes her case a little different, since Hindus believe in reincarnation. Now, if an old AMERICAN woman did this, well….

Michelle June 15, 2010, 6:49 PM

I think a 60 year old woman is told to have a baby. The only exception I could see making was if she had a 40 year old husband.
Or, a 60 year old woman could adopt an older child.
However, 60 is too old to start having babies. This is just selfish.

Healthy Pregnancy - clearly there is a flaw in your theory since you were able to conceive but with your attitude clearly unfit as a person to be a parent.

In your rush to judge her as “selfish” so that you can feel superior, did anyone actually read the original article? This happened in rural India. This woman was stigmatized for not being able to have children (especially a son) when she was younger. Maybe we should look at her husband’s role (he borrowed the money) and look at why she was pressured to do this, rather than call her selfish.

The Internet is like alcohol in some sense. It accentuates what you would do anyway. If you want to be a loner, you can be more alone. If you want to connect, it makes it easier to connect.
