Pisces'So You Think You Can Dance?' Starring My Daughter
Kate Meyers: Last night, my 15-year-old, Annie, and her buddy, Riley, rolled up the living room carpet, cranked the music and choreographed a dance. They called me in to watch and film the finished product. It was one of those fabulous, joyous moments that you can't believe is happening even while it's happening.
I am so grateful that my daughter found dance. It rescues her from the angst of teenage-hood several hours a week, and the high, the confidence and the thrill of mastery last well beyond class. She's easier on herself and easier to be around.
It took a while to find dance. We tried soccer; we tried volleyball; we tried skiing; we tried swimming. Annie always liked the social aspect of sports, but she didn't seem to be that into sport itself. All of this was compounded by the fact that her younger sister is a born jock -- a tremendous competitor who seems, in her older sister's eyes, to glide easily into success.
I am so happy that we kept trying things until Annie found her passion. That has always been my dream as a parent -- that my children find something they're passionate about -- and realizing that that dream is coming to fruition makes me want to embrace the sky.
Watching those girls laugh and smile while moving and creating, seeing them enjoy the power and precision of their bodies and taking in the thought that this was their idea of a great night -- the whole thing made my heart dance.
