Teacher Fired for Having Premarital Sex

Jarretta Hamilton, a former teacher at Southland Christian School in St. Cloud, Florida, got fired for having conceived her daughter three weeks before marriage, reports "Today."

Hamilton was a widowed mother of five and engaged to a new man when she became pregnant. When she applied for maternity leave, the school principal, Joe Ennis, said he was "trying to do the math" and asked if her child had been conceived before her marriage. "I was honest about it," Hamilton said. "I didn't know it would cost me my job."

Hamilton is now suing the school for wrongful termination.

Good for her!

The school's administrator, Julie Ennis, wrote a letter to Hamilton's attorney asking Hamilton to give up the lawsuit. "We request that Jarretta withdraw her complaint and consider the testimony of the Lord," the letter concludes.

Is this crazy, or what?!

If Hamilton is a good teacher, WHAT DOES IT MATTER that she had sex with her fiancé before marriage?!

Do you think Hamilton should have been fired ... or should the school mind their own freaking business?

I was going to blow up about this in my comment but it just isn’t worth it. There’s no talking to some people. She’ll win, there’s no possible way she won’t. The school needs to lighten the hell up.

I’m sure that God was sitting up there going “Oh that’s just bad, three weeks before they’re married!” Seriously sometimes these holier than thou people need a lesson on how imperfect they are as well. Sin is sin is sin.

It’s a private religious school. They have the right to set the rules. Personally, though, I think a little forgiveness is in order when someone is doing the right thing.

She should have been punished. Firing was a tad harsh but that is up to the school.
It was her getting pregnant that got her fired which is what it seems like where they are trying to lead this. It is the ACT which is fornication which goes against the beliefs of the church/school. What if it had been stealing or drugs? Same thing. If she was so urgent to jump in the sack with this guy then she should have gone to a courthouse and gotten married. Takes a day or so to do this and then they could have gotten their business on!

The school being a Christian academy definitely has the right to an opinion, however, whether the school holds true to the scriptural stance on the situation shouldn’t get her fired. They can still keep their position and not compromise their morals, and at the same time use it as teaching case on real life, good/bad decisions, and consequences. Not to mention sin, unconditional love and forgiveness. Are they intending to fire everyone who has cursed in anger, smoked a cigarette, drinks hard liquor, or hated their neighbor as well?

Also, not for nothing, the kids would have had NO idea whether her baby was conceived before or after the wedding, given it was only 3 weeks away. So their apparently oh-so-fragile little souls could have been spared. The only people who exposed anybody to any “sin” was the administrative office.

Two of my kids graduated from Christian high schools, and another is still a student. Obviously you want the teachers and administration to model the behavior that the students are expected to follow. But, as someone already alluded to, there are many more sins than just pre-marital sex. I’d be curious to know if the school holds their teachers accountable for more than just sexual sin. Having said that, the school is within their rights to expect their employees to follow the Biblical standard.

This is sexual discrimination. If she were a man, she could have all the premarital sex she wanted & the school administration would never find out. The only reason they even know—other than the fact that the principal ASKED, which is outrageous—is because she got pregnant & requested maternity leave. The man in this situation wouldn’t need maternity leave, so it would be a non-issue. Yes, the school can make their own rules, but they have to be consistent with ALL sin (good luck with that!) and ALL employees, be they female or male. I doubt that’s the case. It sounds like they wanted to get rid of this teacher, and she handed them a reason. And again, I cannot believe the principal ASKED her when the baby was conceived. Such an invasion of privacy! She should have told him to mind his own business.

riddle me this batman-are religious organizations exempt from equal opportunity and non-discriminatory federal employment laws? The person who posted that this is sexual discrimination was right on. This woman will sue and win. and may god have mercy on these hypocrites souls.

DUMB religion

Consider the testimony of the Lord? Seriously, THE LORD? Who, by all accounts, was HIMSELF concieved out of wedlock? The Lord isn’t judging Jarretta, the school is.I’m sure the Lord is very happy for her and for her new family. I went to a Catholic school myself, and refuse to send my children to one after experiencing behavior that was anything but Christian. Time to consider the testimony of the Lord which was actually about forgiveness, not judgement. Self-righteous fools at that school.

I have an idea, now that she’s done this awful thing, let’s just transfer her to another school until she does it again, then we’ll transfer her again (and hide the paper trail).

Oh, wait…she’s a woman. BURN HER!

Heather  June 14, 2010, 10:47 PM

Those that hold yourself so pious and on such a state above this woman, I’m not fooled.
What’s it said about those who protest too much?
I hope she wins a heck of a lawsuit.
Perfect example of why Church, State & Schools aren’t to be engaged.

Hipocresy in the name of god.
God save me from your followers.

This teacher most likely signed a moral agreement. It is also a private school for which they may have a legal right, to uphold her contract on that grounds! I AM IN FAVER OF THE SCHOOL,PROVERBS 6:32-35

AnaHadWolves June 15, 2010, 5:36 AM

Funny. The God and the Christ to whom I pray don’t sound anything like these clowns at that alleged Christian school.

I hope she wins her lawsuit and those evil trolls who wrote that scurrilous letter to all the parents are forced to eat their own nasty words…as they fill out that check to her.

plumpveronica June 15, 2010, 6:25 AM
