Would You Go on a Matchmaking Site to Meet Friends?

Christina Montoya Fiedler: Forget about finding Mr. Right: Women are going online to meet their new BFFs. Would you do it?

I thought I'd heard it all, but when I heard about a matchmaking site for friends, I was seriously perplexed.

With all the curve balls life has thrown at me since I had a child, the one constant that has remained is my friends. They've been there with me through thick and thin, and whether they live one mile or three-thousand miles away, I know they are always there to fall back on.

I'm fortunate to have a strong network of women to count as friends. I know that not everyone is as lucky. That's where GirlfriendCircles.com comes in. It's a site that allows you to log on and find the perfect friend in your area. It's like blind dating for the position of BFF.

Part of me thinks that women should find friends the old-fashioned way: by getting out there in the real world. The Internet should be used for e-mailing, shopping and food-recipe hunting -- not best-friend searching.

But then I think about how busy we all are, and try to imagine what would happen if I moved to a town where I knew no one. Would searching for friends online be so wrong?

I'd love to hear from other moms. Would YOU try a matchmaking site for friends?

YES! I moved to a new town, 3 states away and many miles. Also with a 2 week old baby! The town I moved to did not even have a Babies R Us! No gymboree classes to meet others like me or anything! So, when we moved into a new neighboorhood where other familes were moving in also, I was estatic! I made some good friends and now with all that is happening with the economy seven of them have moved away! It is terrible! I am kind of starting over again and with another child and all the activities, I am finding it hard. Of course I am still friends with all these people, but you need that face to face relationship with someone, so if this site makes it easier, I say go for it!

I would possibly do something like this. I’m the mom of a young child, and I don’t get out much. I mainly met friends through work (when I was working), but I’m a stay-at-home mom now, and don’t have a lot of young neighbors around. I’d love to meet other women with young children like me.

My husband is in the military and when we moved to our current base I started a Mom’s group for the base on My Space and met a lot of amazing other Moms that way! I will definitely reach out the same way again when the military sends us to our next location :)
