Take advantage of a last-minute vacation right here in your own backyard -- without having it be more work than fun.

With gas prices skyrocketing out of control, many families are skipping vacations this year and opting instead for the "staycation" -- the vacation wherein you don't leave home. But can staying home really be a vacation? Yes, if you follow our top five tips:

1) Give yourself a break.
It's not going to feel like vacation if you are cleaning and doing laundry every second. Designate some free time where you don't worry about the zillion-and-one things you have to do. Then stick to it.

2) Turn off the phone and computer (at least part of the time).
If your phone is ringing off the hook or you're constantly checking e-mail, it's hard to relax. Unplug!

3) Go sightseeing in your own town.
Surely there are some things you haven't seen yet, simply because you live there. View your surroundings through a tourist's eyes, and you might be surprised at what you find.

4) Take "staycation" photos.
Even though you're not in Hawaii or the Grand Canyon, you can still take family photos that are just as beautiful and meaningful.

5) Book a babysitter.
One of the perks of being home is that you have access to trusted childcare. Treat yourself to at least one kid-free night during your staycation.

What are your secrets to a great "staycation"?
