Singer Alexandra Taveras is raising her voice in opposition to Arizona's new immigration law.

Alexandra Taveras

The vocalist -- who sang with The New York Band, tours with Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez, toured with Thalia, had a number-one duet with Tito Nieves and worked with late music legends Tito Puente and Celia Cruz -- has just debuted her songs "Land of the Free" and "Tierra de la Libertad" on the website www.ArizonaApartheid.com.

Taveras performed the songs -- produced and composed by Latin Grammy nominee Jose Luis Pagan -- to raise awareness about the negative impact of Arizona's new law.

Alexandra, who was featured on momlogic last year, confided to Chris Yandek of CYInterview.com, "As for this new Arizona law, when it comes to my daughter, I'd like to see her grow up in a world that is fair and free of discrimination."

Alexandra's songs are available as free downloads as part of an effort to peacefully oppose Arizona's new law.

God what is wrong with you people?!? This law is perfectly logical, it has nothing to do with discrimination.

Anon  July 2, 2010, 3:42 PM

Tell her to go back to Mexico!

Pamala July 2, 2010, 7:34 PM

Yeah cause God forbid you enforce our federal laws and all. Basically people are asking that we allow folks to break the law because they’re “less fortunate” than others. I guess I can go rob a bank now since I need some cash.

Nappanee July 2, 2010, 10:29 PM

The az law has nothing to do with illegal immigration it is simply a wedge to keep the American public from seeing how we are being taken advantage of by the corporate interest. As a browned skin woman with browned skinned children I know first hand you cannot tell you is legal, illegal or born citizen from appearance or even language. Since politicians decided to drum immigration as the new issue du jour (much like gay marriage and prayer in school) my home has been vandelized, I have been accosted while with my children for speaking spanish in the market, And have had to provide a passport to register my children at school, something NONE of the white kids needed. Yes I fear for our saftey and yes I worry about the drums of hatred that are beating throughout MY country.

I think that all these celebs that are making a big fuss about this new law should put their money where their mouths are. They need to pay the medical and living expenses for all the illeagals here. When they are then poor, maybe they will understand. I live in AZ and this is a great thing that has been done.

Nappanee, I’m sorry for what you have been through BUT you need to be blaming our federal gov’t for not taking action to secure our borders, then Jan Brewer would not need to do this to keep the state of arizona safe. She is also doing this to keep the LEGAL citizens of arizona safe. About your house being vandalized, sorry, that is really sad BUT what happens if the cops would just tell, “well we know who did it but they are poor and needed your stuff more than you did”…You would be pissed. Illegal immigrants are BREAKING THE LAW!!! I also believe it is GREAT that you had to show a passport to register your children, I think EVERYONE should be required to that. People should have to PROVE they are here legally and well the federal gov’t is choosing not to do that so someone has to. GO ARIZONA!!!

Chrissy July 3, 2010, 11:02 AM

Does she also sung about Mexico’s ploicies that keep it’s citizen poor and educated and unemployed, thus driving them to temporarily abandoned their to invade ours?
Or sing about the Mexico’s imbreed political, legal corruption?
Yea, didn’t think so.
The illegal immigrant problems starts with the Mexican government.
And will only be completely solved once the Mexican government cleans up it’s act and change it’s policies.
Stop bit-ching aboutAmerican’s policies and start protesting Mexico’s.
We’ve lost 100,000 of jobs (thanks NAFTA)to Mexixco we’ve given they billions in monetary aid.
We have done more for the Mexican people than the Mexican government has.

Jon July 4, 2010, 3:43 PM

No one opposed to this law is supporting illegal immigration. Do you not see the discrimination in this law? You’re giving law enforcement the right to search based on appearances. So tell me, what exactly does an illegal immigrant look like? Are you just going to search every Mexican/Latin American person simply because they’re not white? THAT is why people are opposed to this law. What if, for conversation sake, they said anyone of African orgin—or better yet, European orgin—had to provide proof at all times and could be searched based on appearance. I’m sure you’d fully support this law too if they were searching every white person to provide the proper paperwork everywhere. Immigration laws need to tighten and need to be enforced—but not in a racist manner. That is not what America should be about.

Serge A storm July 4, 2010, 6:43 PM

@ Jon: You stated:”“Are you just going to search every Mexican/Latin American person simply because they’re not white?”” Read the law before you accuse our policemen of illegal acts. Furthermore, I have to carry “my papers” at all times or suffer the consequences.
If a red and green monkey stole your purse, would you give the cops a description of a blue and yellow one, so as not to profile all red and green non thieving monkeys? I am confident that the cops have better things to do than harass “Latino looking” folks for no reason. Now, if someone breaks a law or is acting suspiciously, whether they are Latino or red and green monkeys the cops should investigate and if that person has disrespected all legal citizens and came here illegally they should be deported to their home country. Soooo tired of that Racist Card…and foreign countries trying to tell us how to enforce our borders when they can’t even run their own country. …welcome to America, learn the language and contribute something. Don’t even start me up on Obama’s Aunty….@ Chrissy, Right On!

Anonymous July 4, 2010, 10:47 PM

Serge: Yes, if someone breaks the law, of course you would provide the police with an accurate description. The “racist card” means that for those not necessarily breaking the law—i.e., legal immigrants with proper paperwork—they would be harassed. It happens all the time now to African American citizens driving “too nice a car,” for example, etc. To say police have something better to do is assuming all people, including police, have no bias. I don’t buy that arguement for a second. Take Rodney King and the countless other cases like that. Or better yet, read the first two comments on this page—pure ignorance. “Go back to Mexico”? Really? Perfect example—Alexandra is an Amercian citizen and someone ON THIS VERY PAGE is telling her to go back to Mexico, strictly based on her appearance.

XXXX July 5, 2010, 2:40 PM

what a whiner

Emma July 6, 2010, 6:23 AM

to those stating that you are Soooooo tired of the racist card, and that you are confident that police has better things to do than to harass latinos, you are obviously white as snow and have never been stopped just because of the way you look. My husband who is of Puerto Rican decent and born in Mass. gets harassed because he’s brown skin. He is a tax paying american and he gets harassed in ways he shouldn’t be, and you are going to tell me that being latino has nothing to do with it? wake up and smell the coffee if we are pulling that card is for a reason. Just because you don’t experience discrimination dosen’t mean it dosent exist.

Charlene July 6, 2010, 9:17 AM

I agree with Chrissy. Straighten out your own country before you come to mine illegally. I have nothing against anyone who comes to the US legally and becomes a citizen. But, don’t whine to me about how all these people are so poor and need our help. I think Mexico should be helpng it’s poor citizens so they don’t have to come here illegally.

Anonymous July 7, 2010, 6:11 AM

The motives are moot! Illegal is illegal. Im not racist because I understand it.

I must show ID when:
1 . Making purchases on my department store credit card.
2 When I show up for a doctor’s appointment.
3 . When filling out a credit card or loan application.
4 . When applying for/renewing a driver’s license or passport.
5 When applying for any kind of insurance.
6 . When filling out college applications.
7 When donating blood.
8 . When obtaining certain prescription drugs.
9 . When making some debit purchases, especially if I’m out of state.
10 . When collecting a boarding pass for airline or train travel.
11 . When cashing a check.
I’m sure there are more instances but the point is, we citizens are required to prove who we are nearly every day. Why should people illegally in this country be exempt? For that matter, perhaps AL SHARPTON can answer the question as to why we shouldn’t guard our borders as closely as every other country in the world does?
GO ARIZONA!!!!

1 - A JOB,
2 - A DRIVERS LICENSE,
3 - SOCIAL SECURITY CARD,
4 - WELFARE,
5 - FOOD STAMPS,
6 - CREDIT CARDS,
7 - SUBSIDIZED RENT OR A LOAN TO BUY A HOUSE,
8 - FREE EDUCATION,
9 - FREE HEALTH CARE,
10 - A LOBBYIST IN WASHINGTON,
11 - BILLIONS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF PUBLIC DOCUMENTS PRINTED IN YOUR LANGUAGE,
12 - AND THE RIGHT TO CARRY YOUR COUNTRY’S FLAG WHILE YOU PROTEST THAT YOU DON’T GET ENOUGH RESPECT.
Let’s say I break into your house

A lady wrote the best letter in the Editorials in ages!!! It explains things better than all the baloney you hear on TV.
Her point:
Recently, large demonstrations have taken place across the country, protesting the fact that Congress is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration.
Certain people are angry that the US might protect its own borders, might make it harder to sneak into this country and, once here, to stay indefinitely.
Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests.
Let’s say I break into your house. Let’s say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave.
But I say, “I’ve made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors. I’ve done all the things you don’t like to do. I’m hard-working and honest (except for when I broke into your house).
According to the protesters:
You are Required to let me stay in your house.
You are Required to add me to your family’s insurance plan.
You are Required to Educate my kids.
You are Required to Provide other benefits to me & to my family (my husband will do all of your yard work because he is also hard-working and honest, except for that breaking in part).
If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my RIGHT to be there. It’s only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I’m just trying to better myself. I’m a hard-working and honest, person, except for well, you know, I did break into your house. And oh yeah, I get a free education, where you have to pay your own way through college.(TEEHEE)
And what a deal it is for me!!!
I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of cold,
Uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and bigoted behavior.
Oh yeah, I DEMAND that you learn MY LANGUAGE!!! So you can communicate with me. And don’t forget to make sure your forms are in MY language - I need to understand them…
Why can’t people see how ridiculous this is?! Only in America !
If you agree, pass it on ( in English ).
Share it if you see the value of it.

latinamami July 10, 2010, 1:40 AM

Its really sad how you guys talk about my people, my family, my son. my son who will grow up in this country of lies, hate, discrimination, the arizona law is only targeting mexicans/latinos why not the illegal asians, the russians so this is about race. latinos arent the only ones who do crimes other races do to, your people americans do awful crimes, what is the government doing about that…put yourself in our shoes, what if you were us, how would you guys feel? Check your history this was our land first as in we were here first. Ask where the indians went, ‘oh wait you murderd them’..karma will get you for what you do to life cuz your in violation to our human rights. The day will come when we value human life than invisable boarders.
