4th of July Party: Serve Up the Red, White, & Blue
As a light and refreshing appetizer, serve some fresh parfaits. Using clear glass (or plastic) cups, add some granola, then some white yogurt (vanilla flavored works), and then toss in some strawberries and blueberries. Repeat a few times to get a layered look and you have a healthy, delicious red, white, and blue snack!
Red or Blue punch with vanilla ice cream makes the perfect patriotic signature drink. In addition, have the kids set up a lemonade stand with blue and red lemonade to hand out. This is something fun for kids to do, and if you want to add something extra, set up a tip jar for the kids to split the difference at the end of the day.
Nothing is more American than a good home-cooked BBQ, so grill up some burgers, brats, dogs, veggie burgers, and chicken. Corn on the cob, mashed potatoes and gravy, mac and cheese, coleslaw, and pasta salad are all good side dishes to serve.
If you are looking for something to cool you off on this hot summer day, enjoy an ice cream cone. For the kids, set up an ice cream station where the children can add their own toppings! Include some delicious desserts like blueberry and/or raspberry pies; red velvet cupcakes are also a big hit ... just add a little white frosting and top off with blueberries and strawberries.
Potted flower plants make excellent centerpieces, preferably with red or white flowers -- and then stick a mini flag or two in the soil. To add sparkle to your party, decorate the backyard with white Christmas lights ... and blue and red, if you have them.
Fireworks and Fun-Factor
Gather the children with their bikes, scooters, wagons, and strollers and hold a Patriotic Parade (similar to my Memorial Day post). Let the kids decorate their ride using streamers, ribbons, balloons, and mini American flags. Invite all the children on the block to participate, and notify the neighbors in advance so they can be spectators. Play patriotic tunes while the kids ride up and down the streets showing off their ride with pride! For adults, get active with a friendly game of baseball or volleyball at your local park or beach. Split into 2 teams ... team red and team blue! End your evening with a little magic: find the nearest park, beach, or local venue hosting a fireworks spectacular!
