Ice Cream That's the Bomb!

In the '50s, radioactivity was considered so cool that even ice-cream manufacturers wanted to get in on the action. Snowflake Uranium Ice Cream, however, did not actually include uranium as an ingredient (as far as they knew, anyway). Source

Have a Lick of Breast (Milk)!

Back in 2008, the ever-inventive folks from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) requested that Ben & Jerry's begin substituting human breast milk for cow's milk in their products. The ice cream makers did not comply.

An Ice-Cream Cold War

A Russian ad agency's concept for Duet brand ice cream sparked worldwide debate. The ad featured a smiling caricature of President Obama and the caption, "It's on Everybody's Lips-the Dark Is in the White!" Source

Ice Cream and Brutality Don't Mix

Ben and Jerry's got freezer-burned in 2006 after releasing an ice cream called "Black & Tan." The flavor was supposedly named for the drink that mixes stout with pale ale. Delicious! However, the "Black and Tans" was also the name given to an irregular force of British ex-servicemen recruited during the Irish war of independence and renowned for their brutality. The Marriage of Ice Cream and Gay Rights

To celebrate the advent of same-sex marriage in their native state of Vermont, Ben & Jerry's temporarily renamed their "Chubby Hubby" ice cream "Hubby Hubby" — thus polarizing ice-cream enthusiasts across the country. Source

Alcoholic Meltdown

In 2004, Australian food company Unilever encountered a hiccup when it launched a vodka-flavored ice cream, "Illicit Vodka Cranberry Magnum," as part of its "Vice-Cream" line. Although the ice cream did not contain alcohol, the Australian Drug Foundation protested the ice cream, saying it exploited Australia's "complacency with alcohol." Source

Punk Rockers on Ice

In 2009, the Sex Pistols threatened legal action against ice-cream makers The Icecreamists for using the advertising tagline "God Save the Cream" for their newly released Sex-Pistol ice cream. The flavor (which was only sold to patrons over 18) contained "Viagra-like" stimulants, including ginkgo biloba, arginine and guarana, and was topped off with a shot of La Fee Absinthe. Source
