Elizabeth Kuster: This GINORMOUS 12-level treehouse near Marshalltown, Iowa, has over 5,000 square feet of floor space, plus a telephone, a microwave, a fridge, running water, 13 porch swings, a spiral stairway and a grill. Wowzer! As my dad put it, "There are all kinds of floors and places for a kid to fall out of." LOL!

Tree house

Construction on the Big Treehouse began in 1983; though it's privately owned, guided tours are available by appointment (no flip-flops allowed!). Mick Jurgensen, who built the massive, magical treehouse with the help of his family, says the structure is "only my hobby."

According to the Big Treehouse website, Mick says that, as a kid, he had a special "being alone spot" in the low branches of a maple sapling. He designed the treehouse in his mind first; it took more than two decades to complete.

Hiding out in a leafy, sun-dappled bower with a bird's-eye view is every kid's dream, sure. But in this case, the kids will need to get in line: Mama wants to be alone in her fabulous treehouse for a few hours days weeks!
