My son was born prematurely, and as a result he was unable to latch onto my nipple for the first few weeks of his life. In addition, my body was not quite ready to make milk—I had to pump for quite awhile before I got my supply going. During those first few emotional weeks, I used formula to supplement my hard-earned milk (which we fed via bottle). It was due to the combination formula and breastmilk that my little guy was able to get the calories that he needed to grow strong enough and large enough to latch on to my breast. He’s now 11 weeks old and is breastfeeding like a champ! I hated every bottle of formula I gave to him, but I recognized the medical necessity. I only wish that I could have been more certain of the ingredients. It would be wonderful if there were enough milk banks and enough generous lactating moms so that a mom in my position could have had another mom’s milk as an option.
