PiscesCPSC Warning: STOP Using Sleep Positioners!
Today, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned parents to STOP using infant sleep positioners. Inez Tenenbaum, chairman of the CPSC, says they have had 12 reports in the last 13 years of babies who died when they suffocated in a positioner or became trapped and suffocated between the positioner and the side of a crib.
Joshua Sharfstein, MD, the principal deputy commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), says the FDA's goal is to make sure that parents are educated on the suffocation risks of infant sleep positioners and to urge parents to stop using them immediately.
Eighteen infant sleep positioners were cleared by the FDA in the past, to reduce the risk of acid reflux or prevent flat-head syndrome. But the FDA says they now believe that the modest benefits DO NOT outweigh the risks. Five of the manufacturers have said they will stop marketing the infant sleep positioners, and the others have been asked by the FDA not to sell their products.
Rachel Moon, MD, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics' Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Task Force, says, "I well understand why parents have chosen to use positioning devices -- many parents believe they keep their babies safe. However, at least twelve babies have died in these positioners. We see no scientific evidence that these sleep positioners reduce the risk of SIDS."
The CPSC says this is not a recall with a replacement or a refund; this is just a warning to parents to STOP USING INFANT SLEEP POSITIONERS IMMEDIATELY.

I didn’t use a sleep positioner with my daughter. I had heard of the dangers, as well as those with the crib blanket/cushion/protector thing. (Cant think, too tired! Sleep isnt going well right now). Thus far she has been fine and considering, i cant say I would have found a use for it.
never used with either kid, though with both my girls I used bumper pads, which are also supposed to be bad
I used a sleep positioner with both of my children (aged 5 and 2.5) I never had any issue with them wiggling out. Once they started to roll around, I took it out.
I received a sleep positioner for my shower and i remember waking up one morning and my daughters head was wedged sideways in it, she was fine thank god but i got rid of that thing!!!!

@ Jim I know what your mean. In the current economy its tough to find a job that pays well and is consistent. I have found that if you just work hard and are consistent you can succeed. Look at the writer of this article, they are oviously a hard worker and have just been consistent over time and are now enjoying at least what would appear as somewhat of a success. I would encourage everyone to just keep hustling and moving forward.

I used a sleep positioner with my first child who is now 4 yrs old and was planning on doing so again with #2. I am going to do some research and see if there is any more info on how the positioners caused the suffication.
